Macron’s words vs Macron’s actions. ⁣ ⁣French President Emmanuel Macron pledged to achieve ‘full independence’ when it comes to the production of protective medical masks. ⁣ ⁣Macron’s been criticized for a national shortage of equipment ever since the #COVID -19 outbreak took hold in #France …an equipment shortage that might just have something to do with the massive sell-off of state companies that successive French governments, including #Macron 's, have been presiding over for the last 2 decades...ooooops! ⁣ ⁣ #FrenchPresident #EmmanuelMacron #Coronavirus #Covid19

Could the COVID-19 pandemic result in the break-up of the EU? ⁣ ⁣Italy's prime minister has warned that the #EU risks failing as a project on ‘the biggest test since the Second World War’. ⁣ ⁣Giuseppe Conte is calling for #Brussels to do more to share debt across the bloc and help the countries hit hardest by #coronavirus , like Italy. Up until now, nations like the The Netherlands have not been on board with taking on other members’ financial obligations. ⁣ ⁣Ominously, Conte said that the EU’s leaders are ‘facing an appointment with history’ that they can’t miss...hinting that an #ITALEXIT could be on the cards, if the bloc does not pull together and help its members. ⁣ ⁣ #GiuseppeConte #Italy #CoronavirusUpdates #Covid19

The UK government insists there is no link between coronavirus and 5G. But that hasn’t stopped the spread of baseless conspiracy theories. There has been a wave of vandalism, including this suspected arson attack in Birmingham, on communications hardware around the UK as a result. None of the masts set ablaze by vandals were in any way connected to the roll out of 5G. D’oh!

Remember when back in 2018, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin solemnly pledged that ‘humanitarian transactions’ would still be possible for Tehran, despite the reinstatement of sanctions, which of course weren’t about ‘hurting the people’ of Iran? ⁣ ⁣Fast forward a couple of years and Iran says #Washington is trying to block its request for a $5 billion IMF emergency loan to help fight the COVID-19 #pandemic , which does sound like it might hurt the people of #Iran . ⁣ ⁣Of course, #Pompeo ’s sticking to his line that ‘no sanctions’ prevent COVID-19 aid from getting to Iran. The US itself won’t be drawn on whether it’s trying to torpedo the #IMF loan to #Tehran but the Wall Street Journal reports that it definitely is. ⁣ ⁣Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani called the US’s alleged attempts to exert pressure on the IMF a 'historic disgrace'. ⁣ ⁣ #CoronavirusUpdates #Covid19 #Coronavirus

Julian Assange’s living conditions in #Belmarsh Prison may be much worse than London is willing to admit, WikiLeaks Editor-in-Chief Kristinn Hrafnsson told RT. The max-security prison has all the ingredients to be a hotbed for the novel #coronavirus . It has already reported its first Covid-19 death, but Hrafnsonn says the number of cases in the prison is “undoubtedly higher than reported.” There’s concern because #Assange was already in poor health before the #pandemic . Due to temporary restrictions on visitors, the #WikiLeaks founder – who is being detained pending extradition to the US – has not had contact with his lawyers for three weeks. The bulk of the evidence for his case should be heard on May 18, but the process is likely to stretch to June. ⁣ ⁣ #JulianAssange #FreedomofSpeech

Self-isolation - it’s not quite the same for A-list celebrities and tech billionaires as it is for us mere mortals. But does that stop them from preaching to us about staying home? NO. And more importantly, does it stop them from failing to follow their own stupid advice… @polly_b_official takes a look.

There is no evidence to support an EU-funded taskforce’s claims that RT.com is involved in spreading disinformation about Covid-19, researchers at Manchester University have concluded. ⁣ ⁣In fact Reframing Russia, a group of academics who study Russian media, claimed that EUvsDISINFO’s allegations were themselves so misleading that it risks becoming a source of disinformation itself. ⁣ ⁣The Reframing Russia report found that ‘much of RT’s output is purely factual’ or clearly marked as editorials, meaning ‘the extent of EUvsDisinfo’s misrepresentation of Russian Covid-19 media coverage in the material we then analyzed is troubling.’ ⁣ ⁣ #Disinformation #Facts #Russia #EU

Trump’s so mad at the World Health Organisation, he’s ‘looking into’ withholding US payments to the international body. ⁣ ⁣The US President has accused the WHO of being "China Centric" and of failing to raise the alarm about coronavirus quickly enough. Actually, the WHO notified countries about the dangers of coronavirus back in January. But at the time Donald Trump downplayed the warnings with suggestions that COVID-19 was nothing worse than the common flu. ⁣ ⁣ #WHO #DonaldTrump #CoronavirusUpdates #Covid19 #POTUS

The EU's science chief has become so disillusioned at the bloc’s response to Covid-19 that he quit just three months into his four-year term. Professor Mauro Ferrari said there was a lack of cooperation between member states. His suggestion of setting up a program to combat #coronavirus was rejected because the ERC Scientific Council only funds “bottom-up” research proposed by scientists and not leaders. Ferrari suggested that a raging pandemic probably wasn’t the best time to worry about bureaucracy, and quit in frustration at the system. ⁣ ⁣ #EU #EuropeanUnion #CoronavirusUpdates #Covid19

Russia’s space agency has blasted Donald Trump for essentially declaring outer space the legal equivalent of the Wild West. The US President officially wants to mine the Moon and get companies in orbit to start seizing whatever resources they can get their hands on. However, the deputy director of Roscosmos suggested that pushing aggressive plans to seize parts of other planets is not exactly going to encourage earthly “fruitful cooperation,” and warned of grim consequences. ⁣ ⁣ #IsItaPigeon #meme #space #Trump #news #Earth #Moon

Covid-19 conspiracies have caused WhatsApp to restrict the speed that information can be spread. The app is making it harder to forward messages en masse. Any message which has been repeatedly passed on will now have to be sent one chat at a time, whereas before you could send to five at once. A mini magnifying glass will appear next to any messages deemed suspicious, allowing users to do a quick web search of the information, because you can trust everything you read online! Do you think WhatsApp should be deciding how information is spread? ⁣ ⁣ #Coronavirus #Covid19 #FakeNews #MythBusters

The colonial mindset dies hard, and when two French doctors suggested using Africa as a testing ground for a #coronavirus vaccine, it was never going to go well. ⁣ ⁣Speaking on TV, Jean-Paul Mira and Camille Locht claimed #Africa was a good candidate because it lacked medical equipment and treatments. Unsurprisingly, the Ethiopian head of the World Health Organization Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said he was appalled and called it a 'hangover from colonial mentality'. ⁣ ⁣Ex-Ivorian footballer Didier Drogba also branded the idea “absolutely disgusting,” while former Cameroon striker Samuel Eto’o tweeted: “Africa is not a playground for you.” ⁣ ⁣ #WHO #CoronavirusUpdates #Covid19

You know it’s bad when the army is deployed on the streets of New York, the epicenter of the Covid-19 pandemic. Exactly what Europeans want to hear as they enter an economic crisis: EU bureaucrats are making it legal to serve insects as food. While they make it OK to stick locusts, mealworms, crickets and grasshoppers on the menu because it’s good for the environment, you can bet that MEPs and their flunkies will still be dining on steak tartare and foie gras in Brussels.

Jesus has been arrested in central Moscow. Not that one, but a Russian man called Jesus Vorobyev, who was detained by police for continually refusing to self-isolate. The incident caught on camera has gone viral online because of the less-than-holy language from the man named after Christ. ‘You know, I hope that you all die together with your children, wives and mothers,’ he shouted at the officers. The man’s scared pooch was left alone in the street, before being taken home by his wife. ⁣ ⁣Adding to the weirdness of the incident is the fact it happened in a part of the city which provided the setting for Mikhail Bulgakov’s novel ‘The Master and Margarita,’ part of which also takes place during the trial of… erm… Jesus.

From March 1 to April 4, China has exported 3.86 billion masks, 37.52 million protection suits, 2.41 million infrared temperature detectors and 16,000 ventilator units totaling $1.45 billion (¥10.2 billion ). ⁣EU countries have been fighting shortages of medical devices and protective equipment, resulting in medical staff potentially exposed to higher risks of contracting Covid-19. The US is also suffering from shortages of medical gear, and has even been diverting shipments of vital protective masks from its allies.

Hollywood legend Oliver Stone claims the United States government has revealed its contempt for human compassion and global solidarity with other nations by refusing to lift sanctions on Iran and Venezuela during the Covid-19 crisis. ⁣ ⁣In an op-ed published by the New York Daily News, the three-time Oscar winner noted that Iran has suffered immensely from the virus, but due to US sanctions the Islamic Republic is “reportedly the only country in the world that cannot buy medicines needed to fight the pandemic.”
