I attended the online 2020 Kitten Conference and won this awesome umbrella playing Cat Trivia! But the real prize was all the cutting edge new information I learned about kittens. The online 2020 Feline Leukemia Education Day is coming up July 18. Please consider buying a ticket and attending to learn more about these very special felines! #2020onlinekittenconference #communitycatspodcast #felineleukemia
Fly away home Bachelor Button. Fly away home. Yesterday, Bachelor Button was freed from suffering. She passed at home in the presence of my Mom and I. The last words she heard on this Earth were how very much she was loved and treasured. I cradled her head until she stopped breathing. As a Buddhist, I know four things to be true. 1 ) Life is suffering. 2 ) Nothing lasts forever. 3 ) If it is within my power to mitigate or alleviate the suffering of any sentient being, I will do so. 4 ) Every sentient being, EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. is deeply connected. I only had the honor of caring for Bachelor Button for 20 days, but in that short time she reinforced those universal truths. I’m often called her angel, but please know that she was mine too. Is mine. 😇 Thank you everyone who cared, prayed for, and sent advice for Bachelor Button. Your kindness has sustained me through this time. Please remember Bachelor Button as a fierce tortie who loved buttercream icing, her water fountain, her chin scratched and looking out the window. She cuddled in the crook of my arm during our last night together and slept so peacefully. She was safe, warm, free of fleas, and most important of all, loved. ❤️ Deeply loved. I am forever happy that she got to experience that before she crossed over. 🌈 #tortie #tortitude #squamouscellcarcinoma #cats
Bachelor Button tried to jump the fence into my neighbor’s yard while we were outside today! I was able to grab her at the last second! She is such a spirited, determined little kitty! ❤️😻 I wish I could cure her because it is clear there is a fierce kitty inside her, only her pain from the #squamouscellcarcinoma is holding her back. ☹️ #tortie #tortietude #cats #tnr
My favorite moment from yesterday. Bachelor Button discovered that she can relax on my tummy and she really liked it. She stayed there for a while. Last night was tough on her. She didn’t rest well, produced a lot of mucus, and had difficulty swallowing. She is more comfortable this morning and was able to eat her breakfast. #tortietude #tortie #squamouscellcarcinoma #tnr #tnrsaveslives #cats
Even though her life won’t be long, it can still be beautiful, comfortable, and fun. Palliative care is allowing her to enjoy the time she has left. We had fun in the sun on my back deck. She loved being out there. ❤️😻 #tortietude #tortie #squamouscellcarcinoma #cats #tnrsaveslives #tnr
I’m bringing out the Big Guns! When I worked at the kitten nursery, we would sometimes have kittens that refused to eat. Our secret weapon was Royal Canin Baby cat. Even the most reluctant kittens would gobble it up. So I decided to get some for Bachelor Button. She has a new setup today. New food, new fish mat, and a new water fountain to encourage her to drink more. The water fountain is working great! She is drinking a lot of water. 😺She even ate some of the Baby cat. She has a vet appointment today to check her swollen lymph nodes. #stomatitis #stomatitiscat #stomatitissucks #stomatitisawareness #tnr #tortiecats #tortietude
Silly Bachelor Button was falling asleep and didn’t notice the ball I gently placed on her head! Just a humorous moment to lighten the mood, but unfortunately today’s update is not good. The scale I used to weigh her was inaccurate. I bought a new digital one and she has not gained any weight in the almost two weeks I’ve had her. 😞 She is still 5.2lbs. Worse, she is eating less and less and last night I discovered that she has a large swollen lymph node under her jaw on the right side. And a slightly less swollen one on the left. I will be contacting my vet tomorrow first thing in the morning. #stomatitis #stomatitiscat #tnr #tnrsaveslives #cats
Bachelor Button is 5.6lbs. That is up 0.4lbs in 7 days! She seems to like dry food with fancy feast broths poured on top. She also enjoys some kitten formula too. Thanks @lotusteatro for the formula idea. She has a follow up appointment in July.
Watching Bachelor Button battle stomatitis is heart breaking. Imagine someone stabbing you in the throat with a hot branding iron every time you attempted to swallow food. That is what she is living with. Both wet and dry food cause her pain. My mom suggested blending the wet food with water. That did the trick. She still struggles, but she is able to slurp down the slurry. 😊 I’m not sure if the steroid injection she got is helping, but it should help reduce the inflammation in her mouth.
This morning I caught Bachelor Button grooming. Cats with very painful stomatitis will not groom themselves because it hurts I did not see her groom at all yesterday even though she was pretty filthy. So I am glad to see her grooming today. Always a good sign. Also, I think I heard a little purring. 😻 She got a steroid injection yesterday. Hopefully that will help the inflammation in her mouth. And the best news is that she ate A LOT last night and this morning. It was clearly painful, but she kept trying. I’m so proud of her. #tnr #fosteringsaveslives #cats #torties
Compassion is not convenient. I was reminded of this today. The good news is that Bachelor Button is in relatively good health. She is negative for FIV/FeLV which is wonderful. And aside from anemia from her flea infestation, her lab work is normal. The bad news is she has stomatitis. This is a very painful mouth disease with no known cure. It can be treated, but each case is unique. I can’t keep Batchelor Button and I can’t put her back outside because she will require lifelong treatment for her stomatitis flare ups. My goal is to find her a wonderful home with a person who is willing and able to care for her chronic condition. Until then, she will crash with me. #tnr #cats #fosteringsaveslives #tortiecats
Every morning during the summer I go for a walk. This morning I saw this little Tortie cat drinking from a puddle. I went over to say Hello and immediately noticed that she is in very poor condition. She is emancipated. I can feel all of her bones. 😿 She is covered in fleas. In a case like this, where a community cat is clearly not thriving outdoors, I think it is appropriate to intervene. I took her home. She has a vet appointment today at 3:30. For now, her name is Bachelor Button!😊
I am so happy to introduce you all to Fate. Fate is a neutered community cat. That means he lives outside. He visits different houses in his neighborhood for meals. He is not feral because he is very comfortable with people. One day, people in his neighborhood noticed he developed an abscess on his cheek! Some friends of mine called me to help. We took Fate to the vet where his abscess was drained and cleaned. He was also given antibiotics. He stayed in my house for a week to recover and he was just the most wonderful, loving house guest! After a week, Fate was returned to his neighborhood and continues to do well. My friend told me his wound is almost healed and the fur is growing back. Community cats live outdoors. They don’t always need saving, but sometimes, they can use a helping hand. I will be sure to post updates about Fate!
