Because of the Great Quarantine of 2020, I haven’t been out shooting photos during the past several months. However, I still have a huge backlog of photos that I’ve shot over the past couple of years but haven’t yet had time to edit and publish. I sat down a few days and looked at all my photos since the beginning of 2018, and found 274 shots that I want to work on. So I’ll be busy for a while!⁣ ⁣ This photo is from my first trip to an actual rain forest. I loved it! The ferns, the moss, the vines, the wetness—they all combine to make a unique environment. I want to go back.⁣ ⁣ ◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻⁣ ⁣ “Come to the woods, for here is rest. There is no repose like that of the green deep woods. I loved my year living in San Francisco. It’s a wonderful city, with great culture, restaurants, theater, and interesting people. ⁣ ⁣ On the other hand, I also hated living in San Francisco. It’s loud, crowded, cold, and parking is impossible!⁣ ⁣ Overall, I loved San Francisco more than I hated it. It’s truly a great city. ⁣ ⁣ This shot is taken from the rooftop of my apartment building. The building in the photo is a condo tower, and I love the reflections in the windows. Combined with the pretty sunset sky, overall I thought this shot was good enough to share with you.⁣ ⁣ ◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻⁣ ⁣ “We're crazy about this city. Los Angeles? This photo combines two things that I enjoy watching: a beautiful sunset and a flock of pelicans flying just off the coast. The location is in Pebble Beach, California, on the famous 17-Mile Drive, and just across from the also-famous Monterey Peninsula Country Club. ⁣ ⁣ The camera lens caused the sunlight to flare and highlight both the cypress tree at the bottom left and the pelicans on the right. Clouds always look their best at sunrise and sunset! In spring and summer a photographer has to get up SO early to be out and in position for sunrise. For this shot I set my alarm for 4:30 AM and was in position by the Monterey Marina by about 5:20 AM. The clouds turned colorful about 10 minutes later and I started snapping photos. The best color only lasted about 8 minutes!⁣ ⁣ ◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻⁣ ⁣ “There's a sunrise and a sunset every single day, and they're absolutely free. Since I’m staying home most of the time these days, I’ve been able to catch up on some photos that I shot over the past couple of years but never looked at. 😉⁣ ⁣ One photo that I found is this one, taken almost a year ago on the Oregon coast. Yes, the Oregon coast isn’t as popular as the California coast, but it’s just as beautiful, and a lot less crowded too! This is a sunset shot, and I like how one side of the big rocks (or “sea stacks” ) is brightly lit while the other sides are in shadow. ⁣ ⁣ How are you spending your quarantine time? Are you busy or bored? Here’s another photo of the snowy Oregon mountains. About four weeks ago, just before the lockdown began, I was able to shoot along the Deschutes River here in Oregon during some light snow. This is my favorite shot from that day. It’s intentionally overexposed and defocused a bit to add some abstraction and emphasize the feeling of a late winter afternoon.⁣ ⁣ I like the reflection in the river, with just a hint of ripples visible in the water if you look closely.⁣ ⁣ Winter is now just a memory here in the Pacific Northwest, a memory to which I still cling, and before I let it go I will share a few more snowy photos.⁣ ⁣ ◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻⁣ ⁣ “If spring can take the snow away,⁣ Can it melt away all our mistakes?⁣ Memories made in the coldest winter.⁣ Goodbye my friend,⁣ Will I ever love again?⁣ Memories made in the coldest winter.”⁣ ⁣ - Roland Orzabal / Kanye West / Ernest Wilson, “Coldest Winter”⁣ ⁣ ◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻⁣ ⁣ #snowphotography #ilovewinter #coldweather #snowfun #snowy #snow #lotsofsnow #reflectiongram #water_brilliance #reflection #tranquility #lateafternoon #waterreflections #reflectionsinwater #landscapeshot #brightsky #upperleftusa #bend #deschutes #ariverrunsthroughit #oregonisbeautiful #youroregon #greatoutdoors #abstractlandscape #symmetrybuff #abstractphotography#escaype #ig_thisworld #allbeauty_addiction #sonyvisuals

Here’s a long exposure featuring 20 minutes of star movement through the sky. Of course, the stars aren’t actually moving—the earth is rotating and it only *looks* like the stars are moving!⁣ ⁣ The shot was taken inside a cave that opens onto the beach.⁣ ⁣ The challenge in getting this shot was that a number of people were walking through this relatively narrow cave during the shot, and they had to step around my tripod as they passed by. I was a bit worried about this, but as it turned out, everybody was quite willing to tread carefully and avoid ruining my photo. While walking through the woods surrounding Mt. Hood, my friend spotted this uniquely-shaped tree. It appealed to me right away and the two of us walked around it for a while, trying to figure out the best angle to shoot it from. This photo shows the angle I thought was best. ⁣ ⁣ As always, I love the side light and shadows that clearly show where the sun is setting on this winter afternoon.⁣ ⁣ The main trunk and the curved trunk taken together remind me of the treble clef of written music, although I think it’s actually a backward treble clef!⁣ ⁣ What do you think? There’s nothing like walking through a forest of pine trees just after a heavy snowfall. (Unless you get stuck in a snowdrift, but that only happened to me once! ) I loved this scene when I came upon it. The footpath leads onward, beckoning the traveler deeper into the woods. The snow, still falling lightly, removes contrast from the far trees, lending a good sense of depth to the photo. And enough sunlight is coming in from the left to give a nice run of light and shadow down the path.⁣ ⁣ Please let me know what you think!⁣ ⁣ ◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻◅▻⁣ ⁣ “I wonder if the snow loves the trees and fields, that it kisses them so gently? While in New Mexico visiting my younger son, I took a drive up into the mountains above the beautiful city of Santa Fe. I was looking for trees with which I could try the “intentional camera movement” technique to achieve something of an abstract look. A few weeks ago I was over in central Oregon flying my drone above a mountain lake when my friend pointed out a small patch of fog in the forest above the water. The fog was swirling and changing shape pretty quickly, and I kept my drone in one place while taking a photo every few seconds. My plan was to use Photoshop to combine some of the exposures in a way that showed the swirling fog as one of the main aspects of the final image.⁣ ⁣ Here is the final product, and I’m happy with how it turned out. A few weeks ago I was up in the forests surrounding Mt. Hood (in Oregon, USA ) during a snowstorm. At that point, I hadn’t yet flown my drone in snow, but on this day I thought it might pay off. I hoped for some interesting patterns and lots of snow on the tree branches.⁣ ⁣ The flight went fine and the drone returned safely after taking a few dozen photos during the flight. This photo is my favorite because of the interesting curved line coming out of the top right corner. Last Monday I hiked five miles in central Oregon with fellow photographer @alisonbrownphotography , looking for some beautiful waterfalls to shoot. We found plenty of great falls, and they were all flowing heavily thanks to the abundance of winter rain here in Oregon.⁣ 🚰⁣ 🚰⁣ This photo is of Lower South Falls, my favorite of the seven falls we saw because it’s wide and not too tall, and therefore it fills a healthy portion of the camera frame. I composed this shot to include the sunlight falling on the trees at the top, and I also managed to get in a few ferns that were in the foreground and help to frame the falls.⁣ 🚰⁣ 🚰⁣ I used a long exposure to get the dense, solid look in the falling water. However, I had to use a short exposure on the foreground ferns because they were blowing about quite a bit and I didn’t want them to be blurry. The overall image is a composite of the two exposures.⁣ 🚰⁣ 🚰⁣ “It is life, I think, to watch the water. I spent last week on a photography road trip around Oregon. Most of my time was spent in the vicinity of Mt. Hood because there was quite a bit of snow falling on and around the mountain, and snow is wanted to photograph. In particular, I hoped to capture snowy forest scenes. (Stay tuned for those! ) 🦉 🦉 Mt. Hood itself was shrouded in clouds and fog until late afternoon on Friday when it finally showed itself for about 20 minutes before disappearing into the clouds again. I was fortunate to be close by at the time and I launched my drone because I wanted to capture an image of the mountain with snowy forests in the foreground. Having the drone well above ground level allowed me to look down on the forests and get more trees into the image. 🦉 🦉 Deckard says he likes the late afternoon sunlight illuminating the highest portions of Mt. Hood, while the cloud bank to the left is about to move in and hide the mountain again. He said he thought that the serpentine river at the far left was Hood River, but after looking at Google Maps, I determined that it’s White River. 🦉 🦉 🦉 Rachel likes the black and white look of the forest in the foreground because it reminds her of Oreo cookies. Oreos? Really? OK, yeah, I guess I can see that. Now I’m hungry. 🦉 🦉 🦉 “May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. May your mountains rise into and above the clouds.”—Edward Abbey 🦉 🦉 🦉 DJI Mavic 2 Pro f/5, 1/500 second, ISO 100 Manual Exposure, Automatic Focus Adobe Lightroom Adobe Photoshop 🦉 🦉 🦉 #snow #mavic #dronephoto #pinetrees #djicreator #snowisfalling #djimavic2pro #dronedaily #shotondji #snowydays #pinetree #djidrone #ridge #snoweverywhere #hillside #aerialshot #forestlove #trees 🌳 #snowmountain #sceneries #djipilot #airview #snowflake #mthood #oregon #oregonisbeautiful #mthood #mthoodnationalforest #mthoodwilderness #pnwcollective

This aerial photo of a snowy hillside full of pine trees is from my March 2019 trip to the Eastern Sierras of California. A snowstorm had just passed through the region, leaving a nice, fresh coat of whiteness on the tree branches—which is what I always hope for when I photograph snowy trees. (In fact, some snow was still falling when this shot was taken, which made me a little nervous about water damage to my drone! ) 🌲 🌲 The full photo from the drone is of a much larger portion of the hillside, but after some experimentation, I decided that I prefer this close crop. It highlights the depth of the photo, because some of the solo trees—in particular, the tree the near the bottom edge that is just to the right of the horizontal center—seems to be quite well separated from the snowy hillside behind it. (I really like having depth in my photos! ) 🌲 🌲 I was unable to get Deckard’s thoughts on this photo because he is up on the roof and in the midst of a dispute with a fellow named Roy. 🌲 🌲 🌲 “Thank goodness for the first snow. It was a reminder—no matter how old you became and how much you'd seen, things could still be new if you were willing to believe they still mattered.” - Candace Bushnell 🌲 🌲 🌲 DJI Mavic 2 Pro f/10, 1/30 second, ISO 100 Manual Exposure, Automatic Focus Adobe Lightroom Adobe Photoshop 🌲 🌲 🌲 #snow #mavic #dronephoto #pinetrees #pines #djicreator #snowisfalling #djimavic2pro #dronedaily #shotondji #snowydays #pinetree #djidrone #ridge #snoweverywhere #hillside #aerialshot #pineforest #forestlove #trees 🌳 #throughthepines #forestspirit #airphotography #snowmountain #sceneries #djipilot #airview #snowflake #christmasfeeling #wintermorning

About ten days ago, heavy rain in the Portland area felled most of the remaining autumn-colored leaves from the deciduous trees. I usually like rain, but I was sad to see that the storm had produced a lot of bare boughs and branches with their beautiful leaves now being blown about on the ground, waiting to be raked up and taken away. At that point, the fall photography season was over, at least in my mind, and I started thinking about winter photography. ❄️ ❄️ This photo is from Yosemite National Park in California and was taken shortly after a snowfall, so there is a lot of fresh snow on the trees. Deckard and his friend Rachel took a look at it for me before I posted it. They liked the curving lines of the stream, the cool blue hue, and the fog lurking in the background. I would add that the reflections in the water are also nice. 😀 ❄️ ❄️ I already miss autumn and her colors, but I will try to forget her—until next year—and move on to winter. ❄️ ❄️ ❄️ “And since we’ve no place to go, let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.” - Sammy Cahn ❄️ ❄️ ❄️ #adventureenthusiasts #lifeelevated #hikingislife #lifeoutside #treemagic #treeshunter #savetrees #tree_magic #tree #escaype #ig_thisworld #allbeauty_addiction #sonya7r #bealpha #gmaster #gmasterlens #sonyalpha #sonyalphaphotography #sonyvisuals #sonyworldclub #visualambassador #yosemite #yosemitenps #yosemitepark #explorecalifornia #snowglobe #snowflake #wintercoming #snowland #snowfall

Oregon has many beautiful waterfalls, especially near the “Gorge” around the Columbia River. The most well-known and most-photographed of these is Multnomah Falls, but there are many others. While checking out some of the lesser-known falls, I came across this one. I thought it was particularly beautiful because it's situated in dense vegetation and has many variations of light and shadow around it.⁣ 🚰⁣ 🚰⁣ Deckard finds the photo to be very peaceful and relaxing. He likes how the stream falls unimpeded in a narrow column, and the way it spumes in the small pool below. I would add that just enough sunlight passes through the higher trees to light up portions of the lower leaves and provide a nice frame for the falls.⁣ 🚰⁣ 🚰⁣ 🚰⁣ “Just let go—and fall like a little waterfall.” - Bob Ross, beloved painter and television host. 🚰⁣ 🚰⁣ 🚰⁣ Sony a7R III⁣ f/14, 1/4 second, ISO 100⁣ Manual Exposure⁣ Manual Focus⁣ Sony FE 16-35mm F/2.8 G Master @ 29mm⁣ Lee ProGlass 3-stop neutral density filter⁣ Manfrotto tripod and ball head⁣ Adobe Lightroom & Photoshop⁣ 🚰⁣ 🚰⁣ 🚰⁣ #adventureenthusiasts #lifeelevated #hikingislife #lifeoutside #treemagic #treeshunter #savetrees #tree_magic #tree #escaype #ig_thisworld #allbeauty_addiction #sonya7r #bealpha #gmaster #gmasterlens #sonyalpha #sonyalphaphotography #sonyvisuals #sonyworldclub #visualambassador #oregonisbeautiful #latourellfalls #nwisbest #dontgochasingwaterfalls #oregonadventures #columbiagorge #getoutandexplore #pnwexplored #mounthood

Here’s another photo from my favorite pine forest in the Eastern Sierras of California. This was taken last March in the midst of a snowstorm. I found this particular tree to be somewhat isolated; there weren’t any others close to it, but there was a whole line of trees in the background, only partially visible due to the blowing snow. I thought the isolation on the subject combined with the only partially-visible background was a winning combination for a photo. 🌲 🌲 I like the snow on top of all the tree’s branches and also the wall of snow stuck to the tree trunk. 🌲 🌲 My friend Deckard thinks this is a “minimalist” image, and as usual, he’s probably right. Deckard has no training or experience in photography—he helps people with their retirement—but he does seem to have a good eye for this sort of thing. 🌲 🌲 “I wonder if the snow loves the trees and fields, that it kisses them so gently? And then it covers them up snug, you know, with a white quilt; and perhaps it says, ‘Go to sleep, darlings, till the summer comes again.’” - Lewis Carroll in Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There 🌲 🌲 🌲 Sony a7R III Manual exposure, manual focus f/8, 1/200 second, ISO 800 Sony FE 70-200mm F/2.8 G Master @ 70mm Hand-held Adobe Lightroom Classic and Photoshop 🌲 🌲 🌲 #visitcalifornia #california #hikecalifornia #californiadream #californiadreaming #california_igers #californiaroadtrip #adventureenthusiasts #wildcalifornia #californian #lifeelevated #hikingislife #lifeoutside #treemagic #treeshunter #savetrees #tree_magic #tree #escaype #ig_thisworld #allbeauty_addiction #sonya7r #bealpha #gmaster #gmasterlens #sonyalpha #sonyalphaphotography #sonyvisuals #sonyworldclub #visualambassador

This image is from the Eastern Sierras of California and was taken last March. The tree is just one of many that were in front of me at the time, but in thinking about photo composition, I decided it would be more interesting to show only a single tree instead of many trees. I picked the one that had the most interesting shape, with trunk, bough, and branches spreading out in a serpentine pattern. 🎃 🎃 The photo was taken just after the sun came up, which results in the shiny highlights not only behind the tree but on the yellow brush in the foreground. 🎃 🎃 I showed this shot to my friend Deckard and he said it looked spooky. I’m always hoping to elicit an emotional response from people who view my photos, but “spooky” is not what I had in mind! Nevertheless, I can see what Deckard means. So I’ve decided to make this my Halloween post. Please enjoy the pumpkin emojis! And I’m just three weeks late for Halloween. 😀 🎃 🎃 “Storms make trees take deeper roots.”—Dolly Parton 🎃 🎃 🎃 Sony a7R III Manual exposure, manual focus f/8, 1/40 second, ISO 100 Sony FE 70-200mm F/2.8 G Master @ 122mm Really Right Stuff TVC-34L tripod and BH-55 ball head Adobe Lightroom Classic and Photoshop 🎃 🎃 🎃 #visitcalifornia #california #hikecalifornia #californiadream #californiadreaming #california_igers #californiaroadtrip #adventureenthusiasts #wildcalifornia #californian #lifeelevated #hikingislife #lifeoutside #treemagic #treeshunter #savetrees #tree_magic #tree #escaype #ig_thisworld #allbeauty_addiction #sonya7r #bealpha #gmaster #gmasterlens #sonyalpha #sonyalphaphotography #sonyvisuals #sonyworldclub #visualambassador

Here’s another photo from my hike through the California redwood forest last May. I was lucky to be there during a foggy few days because the fog adds so much emotion to the image. It also signals depth—the trees in the distance are more obscured by fog, giving the viewer a sense of three-dimensionality even though it’s a two-dimensional image. 🌲 🌲 My good friend Deckard looked at this image and told me that he really liked the bits of sunlight entering from the right, boring through the fog and creating some bright spots on the trees and on the ground ferns. Deckard isn’t a photographer—he’s in law enforcement, sort of— but he usually has good insights about my images. age. 🌲 🌲 “The feeling [the redwoods] produce is not transferable. From them comes silence and awe. It's not only their unbelievable stature, nor the color which seems to shift and vary under your eyes, no, they are not like any trees we know, they are ambassadors from another time.” - John Steinbeck 🌲 🌲 🌲 Sony a7R III Manual exposure, manual focus f/16, 0.1 seconds, ISO 800 Sony FE 24-70mm F/2.8 G Master @ 24mm Really Right Stuff TVC-34L tripod and BH-55 ball head Adobe Lightroom Classic and Photoshop 🌲 🌲 🌲 #visitcalifornia #redwood #redwood -forest #redwoods #california #hikecalifornia #californiacoast #californiadream #californiadreaming #california_igers #californiaroadtrip #adventureenthusiasts #wildcalifornia #californian #lifeelevated #hikingislife #lifeoutside #humboldtcounty #escaype #ig_thisworld #allbeauty_addiction #sonya7r #bealpha #gmaster #gmasterlens #sonyalpha #sonyalphaphotography #sonyvisuals #sonyworldclub #visualambassador
