It seems like a lot of people are not aware of how little it takes to pollute the environment. It can be a single lid of a plastic bottle or of a coffee cup 🥤earlier or later it ends up in the sea 🌊 🐠 We were truly inspired by the idea of the people living along the Spanish coast 💚 Just as it does not take a lot to pollute the environment, it does not take a lot either to make the fight against pollution with such a beautiful piece of art 🚮♻️ Repost from @greenkayak .ngo . . #greenkayak #plasticocean #savethewhales #plasticsucks #savetheocean #protectourplanet #plasticfreeoceans #plasticfree #plasticpollution #uselessplastic #planetorplastic #climatecrisis #breakfreefromplastic #saveouroceans #plasticpollutes #cleanouroceans #saynotoplastic #beatplasticpollution #reducereuserecycle #noplastic #zerowaste #zerowasteliving #plasticfreejuly #environmentallyfriendly #greenpeace #pollutionfree #lessplastic #passonplastic

Several dead whales lay across a beach after a successful whaling trip in Spitsbergen, Norway in the year 1905. (Hulton Archive/Getty ) ————————————————— During the late-1800’s to the early-1900’s an high peak in whaling activity as the demand for more and more products required whale fat. ———————————————— Many young men across the world were eager to make a fortune from hunting the large majestic beast in the open waters of their natural habitat. America was an epicenter for the hunting of whales, in the 1840’s “there were about 735 American whale ships out of a total worldwide of about 900”. (Live Science ) —————————————————- Sperm whales were targeted in particular for their spermaceti. The spermaceti that was found in a sperm whale’s head had a higher price than oil. During World War One, sperm whale blubber was used for lubricant for rifles or for treatments for trench foot. ——————————————————- However, whaling was extremely dangerous for the crew. Most whalers would approach the giant animals on small boats with iharpoons attached. These harpoons were usually made of soft iron so that it could bend while the whale twisted and turned. Once the harpoons had pierced the whale’s flesh, lances and cutting knives were used to jab the whale’s tail tendons to immobilize the animal. This was one of the most dangerous parts of the job as a 35-45 ton animal that was extreme pain could have easily knocked the crew into the water or killed them on impact. —————————————————- Once the whale was killed, nearly nothing was wasted. Baleen was used for fishing poles, buggy whips, and some clothing items. Crewman would often cut away at the carcass from beside the bow of the boat, as they stood on top of the carcass or in the smaller rowboat. After cutting strips of fat off a whale, the crew would then toss it to the men on the ship. The fat was then boiled to create oil. —————————————————— Whale populations fell dramatically, some species even faced extinction until the late- 20th century. Whaling is still a problem today in countries such as Japan. . #savethewhales #savetheplanet #ocean #oceanlife #spermwhale #wildlifeconservation #savetheocean #whaling #history #nature

#ThrowbackThursday Hey guys, what’s kraken? This is the Edestus. They could have grown to be 20 feet in length and could have weighed up to 2 tons!. The Edestus lived during the late Devonian Period - late Carboniferous Period. It is assumed that their main diet was fish, however their diet is still unknown. #Edestus #Mananalu #Sami #Alofa #love #ocean #savetheturtles #savethedolphins #savethewhales #savethereef #savetheocean #lovetheturtles #lovethedolphins #lovethewhales #lovethereef #lovetheocean #plasticfree #oceanlife #oceanactivist #whatskraken ? ... 🇬🇧Humpback Whales have the ability to see both underwater and on the surface, since the whales' eyes are adapted for this change in environments. An adaptation to the aquatic environment is the shape of the eye that is slightly flattened and have a large pupil (compared to terrestrial mammals ) which allows more light to enter the retina during dives. When diving, whales are able to see around 10 meters away, but on the surface this distance is even shorter. But this reduced range is compensated by the eye's ability to focus, which works separately in each eye, to form an image with a wide field of view. Whales have few rods, indicating that they do not see many colors. #whales #baleia #ocean #whalewatching #nature #wildlife #humpbackwhale #marinelife #animals #whalesofinstagram #photography #marinemammals #oceanlife #wildlifephotography #travel #savethewhales #underwater

My latest complete painting in the "Orca Strait" series. "Orca Estuary" Thank you, Samuel Pervais, for the name! 16"×20" Acrylic on wrapped canvas. Available from me, or will be at #pacificartsmarket at 1448 West Broadway in #Vancouver on October 1st. From reference photos by @karaclindsay and a ferry ride from Nanaimo. I haven't been able to paint anything but orcas since the beginning of 2020, with Helen the dolphin being the exception. I feel they are telling us something. I need to share it. By eating farmed salmon, and I'll be honest, by eating any salmon right now (unless you are Coastal First Nations ) we are literally taking food from the orcas. The farmed salmon get Sea lice and other diseases that travel through the nets and sicken the wild salmon, devastating the Orcas' food supply. Our dams, ships and pollution all contribute to their endangerment. We can change this. One BIG step is ending all new pipelines and transitioning off fossil fuels. Spills in the ocean and inland watersheds have devastating effects on the salmon and orcas. We have the tech. Let's use it. #savethewhales @pacific_arts_market #orcapainting #orcas #orcapod #killerwhale #blackfish #pacificartsmarket #pacificocean #whale #britishcolumbia #Nanaimo @amandaorum @omg_username123 @mandolynforpm @paulmanly

Dolphins and whales are considered the "sentinel" of our oceans health. Often, they are the species that is impacted the most by food web changes, climate change, noise and chemical pollution, habitat degradation, and other anthropocentric causes. On the flip side, these species are critical to our oceans. They are considered ecosystem engineers as they help to fight climate change, fertilize our oceans, play the role as an apex predator, and so much more. These sentinels need your help though. Like. Follow. Share. Donate. Educate. There are so many ways to help! How are you going to help whales and dolphins today? Image: Pablo Heimplatz

My continued nostalgic whale moments journey had me thinking about one of my most unusual encounters today. On a windy day in Iceland it is breaching weather. Whales definitely jump more when it is windy and especially just as the wind picks up. I have been lucky and seen many species breach. Humpbacks are of course the breach champions. Grays and southern right whales also breach pretty often. I have also seen orcas, sperm whales and on two very rare occasions Minke whales and a fin whale, but it was so choppy at these moments I could barely stand, let alone take out a camera. But my most unusual breach encounter was in the Sea of Cortez off the coast of Baja, Mexico. On a calm and beautiful day while on a live-aboard trip we saw a Bryde's whale breach eleven times. It is of course not unheard of for Bryde's whales to breach, but it is rare and the whale expert I was with on this trip, Mark Carwardine, had never seen one breach before in many more hours on the water than I had notched up. My arms ached as I held my camera up for ages, not wanting to miss a single shot. Here are a few. It is amazing these fast, streamlined whales breach much less than the fat ones. Don't ask me why. #breach #whales #whale #whalewatching #whalewatch #lovewhales #inspiredbynature #naturephotography #wildnature #brydeswhale #wildlifetravel #wildlifephotography #lovetravel #lovetraveling #oceanlover #oceanlove #oceanlovers #bbcearth @whalesnation @americancetaceansociety #savetheoceans #savethewhales #breach #breaching

👇 ---------------------------------- Would you dive in? ➖ 📍Andenes, Norway 🇳🇴 ➖ 📸 @Seb_Capture ---------------------------------- ✍ Since my trip to Norway I have seen whales in Hawaii too, but nothing as close as this one! It was so close I just used a 50mm lens! Sperm whales are great to photographe, they actually warn you that they're going to dive! The sequence is always the same, deep breath, disappears slightly under water, the back appears and then the tail. . . . . #Whales #Whale #Whalewatching #Savethewhales #Whaletail #Whalewatch #Spermwhale #Whalelove #Whalelover #Whalesofinstagram #Whalelife #Whalewatchingtour #Thewhale #Marineanimals #Oceancreatures #Oceananimals #Deepocean #Marinemammal #Deepseacreatures #Cetacean #Cetaceans #Adorableanimals #Savetheocean #Saveouroceans #Marineconservation #Undersea #Seacreature #Marinemammals #Seaanimals #Baleine

Next to the giants of this mother whale and her calf, the turtle looks tiny! An initial reaction may be concern for the Turtle, for the Humpbacks are far larger but there’s no need to worry! Tomorrow at 6:00 pm PST I will be listing a LIMITED amount of preorders. The reason they are limited is because I don’t want to overwhelm myself. And I’d like to have a September update with lots of fall themed things as well. So although this might sell out please don’t be upset with me I just want to see how this goes doing pre-orders, and if it goes well I plan to do it again! Tomorrow there will be orca mugs, ocean mugs, monstera mugs, Bigfoot mugs, and autumn mountain mugs. The mountains and Bigfoot mugs I also plan to have for sale in the September restock. Thank you so much everybody for your support!
