Here is yesterday’s Sunday Morning Mashup. This one was a sweaty one! We performed these 6 exercises for 1 minute as an accumulator with 30 sec rest between each round. Exercise 1 Exercise 1+2 Exercise 1+2+3 ......all the way up to 6. Happy Monday everyone! ☀️ I hope everyone had a great holiday weekend! 🇺🇸 • • Start your week off with this fun little exercise. I like to use this with a lot of patients struggling with shoulder pain 💥 You can modify it to a plantigrade position (i.e hands on a table or bed ) or doing it on the wall. The added benefit with the plank position is getting that core more involved 👌 • • This is a great way to foster stability in BOTH shoulders. The arm that is reaching is doing a lot of work, but the stationary arm also has to work hard to stabilize against the tension provided by the reaching arm. • • Keep your core tight and don't let those hips rotate all over the place! Spread your feet a little further than your typical plank to give yourself that stable base 👍 You can perform this by sets and reps or by time ⏰ For example: 1 ) reach as many times as you can within 20 seconds or 2 ) reach 8-10 times per arm. Repeat 3-4 times. • • Have fun 😊

There are a good number of exercises that can be really effective in training many aspects of functional fitness. However, in several cases the form of the movement that often gets popularized is way too advanced for the great majority of people to benefit from their use in our workouts. A great example is the renegade row! _______________ The name might be a bit misleading because while there is obviously a row in the exercise it is NOT really an upper back exercise. That is because the plank position is too unstable of a position for us to really produce enough force to row a significant weight. Therefore, we need to understand what the exercise is really trying to teach us about better functional movement. _______________ The renegade row is obviously a plank and as with all planks we want to create force into the ground to create the “bracing” of the core that makes it a great foundational core exercise. Once we get proficient at the plank, we want to work on our ability to maintain stability and if we realize stability is about allowing for wanted movement while resisting unwanted movement (thank you for Dr. Marcello for that great quote! ) Understanding this means we appreciate that the REAL goal of the renegade row is to resist rotation of the body which requires A LOT of strength from many muscles including our glutes, obliques, and lats. _______________ Since there are so many exercises that teach the concept of resisting rotation why use the renegade row? The rowing action does involve the lats and brings the connection to the posterior oblique system (the chain of lat, core and opposing glutes ) as well as the anterior chain which is the obliques and adductors. So, when we see a foot come off the ground, or the hips go into flexion we realize that we just aren’t ready to benefit from this drill yet. So, I’m sharing some great #DVRT exercises that teach us how to more progressively benefit from this movement. Progression as always is key and understanding the intent tells us how to build these progressions.

Plank it. _________________________________ If you can make time to do 3 sets of 30 second planks you will see a marked improvement in your shoulder, arm, abdominal and lower body strength. It looks easy but it’s tough maintaining the correct alignment and not sinking into your lower back. Start slow. Try to stay up for 15 seconds and then do up to 30seconds. Increase the repetitions only once you’ve got the form right else you risk hurting yourself. Also once you’re done, lie on your belly and catch your breath before going up again. Renegade rows are a mash-up of two of the best upper body builders It requires you to stop making one common mistake: Twisting your hips. How To Do A Renegade Row: Place two dumbbells on the floor shoulder width apart. Assume a plank position with your feet wider than shoulder-distance apart. Grasp the dumbbells so your hands are elevated off the floor, maintaining a neutral wrist position. Drive your right arm through the dumbbell into the floor, stiffen your entire body, and row the left dumbbell up and to the side of your rib cage—your elbow should be pointed up and back. Keep your body stable as you slowly lower the dumbbell back to the floor. Then repeat on the other side.
