I used to think perfectionism was a trait to be desired. After all, it means you're analytical, pay attention to detail and take pride in your work. 𝘙𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵?⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ It's what I would tell myself whenever it took me 𝘸𝘢𝘺 too long to start a task, never mind complete it!⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ It's what I would use as my defense everytime I was hard on myself for making ANY mistake.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ It's what I would use as my excuse for being anal about things others couldn't care less about. ⁣⁣ It's the reason I would re-read a text, email, a piece of work or a social media post, over and over again -'It 𝘩𝘢𝘴 to be worded perfectly'.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ All of these situations were in reality, me just 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐫𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 in getting something done.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ So why am I telling you this?⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Well, if you're anything like me (which I'm betting you are ), then you also do the same thing. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Perhaps you do it and haven't admitted it yet. In which case, now is your chance!⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ It is important to know when your 'perfectionism' is really just procrastination in disguise.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Why?⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Well, procrastination is the thief of time.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Procrastination is what stops us from making changes in our life that we 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸 would make us feel more fulfilled and whole, but that 'now is not the right time' or that we'll 'do it tomorrow' or 'someday'. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ It's what keeps us stuck in a life we're not happy with.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ It's what prevents us from actually living the experiences we envy others for experiencing.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ It's what stops us from stepping off the 9-5 hamster wheel to pursue that business dream.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ It's what keeps us from freeing ourselves from toxic or outgrown relationships.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ It's what causes you to waste time and energy that leaves you tired and no time to do the things you enjoy, or spend time with the people you love.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ It's what ultimately fills you with regret... ⁣⁣ I'm telling you this because I have done all of these things and I don't want that to be you!⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Don't let procrastination disguised as perfectionism, hold you back from doing the thing you are meant to do and the things that will bring you the most joy! ⁣⁣ What are you procrastinating on and why?

Als je deze quote leest, denk je misschien bij jezelf: ja logisch. En dat is het ook, want zo werkt het in ons brein. Wij maken in ons hoofd van iets een obstakel door de gedachten, de overtuigingen die we erover hebben. Gebeurt er iets of ligt er iets op je bord waar jij geen uitgesproken mening of gedachte over hebt, dan ervaar je het ook niet als een obstakel. Dan hang je er geen negatief label aan en ga je het gewoon aan. Dat verandert als je er wel een uitgesproken mening of gedachte over hebt. Dit kan te maken hebben met een norm, die je hebt meegekregen tijdens de opvoeding of die je jezelf gaandeweg je leven hebt opgelegd. Een norm waar je aan moet voldoen of wat er van je verwacht wordt; kortom waarvan je denkt dat je het moet doen, want anders.... en dan denk je iets. Juist dan kan het een obstakel worden, omdat het op je drukt als een 'moeten' of omdat je er niet onderuit kan. Het kan ook zijn dat je iets groter maakt in je hoofd dan het is, doordat je allerlei scenario's bedenkt die zouden kunnen gaan gebeuren. De zogenaamde beren op de weg. Obstakels ontstaan dus vooral door je gedachten. You know it, you know it but... you have to believe it. Why would anyone hold on to that toxic belief that they somehow deserve it? . Apart from low self-worth, absurdly, it gives them an illusion of control. . If it was something that they did, then maybe they can do better (shades of perfectionism ) and therefore reach their desired outcome - which is, always, to transform a toxic loved one into a non-toxic, loving one. . And it never happens. . . Instead, you have a job of acceptance and self-acceptance to do. You have to accept that, • it really is that bad • you can’t change • you didn’t deserve it • you cannot change the outcome, no matter how miserable you are. . Nobody wants to have to suck up accepting tough truths. However, that is the way to peace of mind and a true new beginning. . It’s been a HOT minute since we woke up at 4am to get our workout in. As in... 3 weeks 😬🤷🏻‍♀️ we’ve been doing them at 6am or in the evenings. 😝 Didn’t want to get up - At all 🙄 Did it anyway because we’re adults. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Corey & I talked about nutrition. Ours has sucked for basically 3 weeks now. This past week has been a lot better but not like it was. Vacation - we ate out every night. It carried over until last week. 🙃 The hardest part (my opinion, Karen ) is that we go into “eating healthy” after YEARS of eating like crap & expect healthy options to taste exactly like processed stuff. We want the same textures & tastes... food is made that way because of chemical processes. Making the change to whole more organic foods can be challenging but you were made for challenging 😘 I just want you to know the damage that it’s doing to your body. I want you to be informed. WE'RE IN A BROCOLLI CRISIS⁣ 🙄 ⁣ I placed a grocery order for Monday, and when I went to pick it up, they told me that everything was there - except for the broccoli.⁣ ⁣ I thought - that's OK. I’d forgotten to some other items as well (getting old? ). We all want that perfect pilot episode that is going to be shared by @joerogan or @msrachelhollis and launch our podcast to the top of the charts! But the truth is, that is not going to happen…or at least you can’t make that plan the cornerstone of your growth strategy. There is going to be trial and error…you are going to have bad episodes…you will have episodes that you look back on in a year and say “I can’t believe I actually put that on the air.” I just heard @lewishowes make a similar statement as he was celebrating his 1000th episode. He did not wait for perfection to get started…and he seems to be doing alright. The best way to learn is by putting something out there, taking feedback, making changes along the way, and before you know it, you’ll be on episode 10 or 100 or 1000, with a loyal listener base who has been along for the journey and who, by the way, trusts you EVEN MORE because you were willing to put yourself out there when you were less than perfect…and everyone can relate to that. Don’t let analysis paralysis have the final say in your success. Go for it!!
Homework: Pick a date for your launch - give yourself enough time to prepare, but make it soon enough that you feel some pressure. Then, stick to that date and prepare for launch!

An interesting phenomenon frequently occurs when perfectionists accomplish their goals; it’s referred to as moving the needle. After working tirelessly to achieve amazing feats, they immediately set sight in something bigger, greater & further out of reach. ⛰ This alone isn’t detrimental; in fact, it’s witnessed from high achievers in all settings. The issue is the state of mind often experienced throughout the process. Neurotic perfectionists are never satisfied with current circumstances. They work rigidly to achieve more success, money or fame, often seeking the approval of others. 🤷🏻‍♂️ They always feel the discrepancy between where they are & where they want to be. They set goals so challenging, outsiders consider them unrealistic. When the lofty goals are met, the overwhelming feeling is relief, not joy or satisfaction. ☑️ Relief they won’t be viewed as a failure. Relief they didn’t let anyone down. Relief they proved the doubters wrong. Does any of this resonate or do you know anyone who exhibits this behavior? 🤔 Notice the destructive pattern: 1 ) We are unhappy with what we have 2 ) When we achieve more, it provides no satisfaction 3 ) We set our goals higher 4 ) Repeat The problem resides in our belief we will only be happy when we have more. The problem is the belief we must achieve a certain status to appease or earn the love of those around us. We must come to the place where happiness isn’t out there, tied to some accomplishment. 💪🏼 Nothing about us is inadequate; this is a toxic belief that serves no benefit in our lives. LOVE of self is our birthright. Nothing is required; no prerequisites exist. 💞 Set challenging goals. Strive to achieve without rigidity. Enjoy the process without concern for outcome. My perfectionism has been popping up a lot! I’ve been thinking about where it came from and I can’t help to think a lot of it is from being a gymnast for 10+ years. Perfection presents itself in gymnastics in so many ways: -perfectly follow the rules -be more perfect than the other girls -have the perfect body -perfect means success Even after 6 years of being out of the gym, I’m seeing these perfectionist mindsets spill over into other parts of my life, like my career, relationships, & things that are supposed to be just hobbies. Some of those aspects are positive, while others aren’t. While perfectionism may have served me in the gymnastics world, I’m realizing it isn’t always serving me now. So I’m writing about it in short blog series, called Unlearning Perfection, and part 1 is up now! I’m on a mission to unlearn that perfection is everything, so I can learn that being me is enough. SELF CARE HAS BECOME A TRICKY SUBJECT.⠀ ⠀⠀ There are so many differing views on what is self care. Also companies are now capitalizing on self care, so it has become something to buy rather than do.⠀ ⠀⠀ Additionally, avoidance of doing certain things increases our anxiety.⠀ ⠀ Staying in bed for days on end feeds depression (though both these things feel better temporarily ).⠀ ⠀⠀ Unsurprisingly, one is the most common questions I get asked by clients, is how do I know what self care is? How do I know if I’m taking care of myself by staying in or going out?⠀ ⠀⠀⠀ ASK YOURSELF —> Will I feel better or worse AFTERWARDS? Not during, but after the event or commitment is over?⠀ ⠀⠀ If the idea of skipping brunch with friends gives you a sense of relief, skip it! If you will feel guilty and go into a shame spiral, I would recommend going anyways.⠀ ⠀⠀ You also can start to learn your patterns. For example, when I book a workout class I am pretty much guaranteed to NOT want to go. But I feel SO much better 100% of the time. And skipping makes me feel worse 100% of the time.⠀ ⠀⠀ Of course I do not always follow this guideline. Год!! Всё, что мне делали до этого - мне просто не нравилось. ⠀ Я пытаюсь душить в себе перфекциониста, но стоит ли? Считаю, что нужно делать либо хорошо, либо никак. I used to be a passive people-pleaser and an "overachieving" perfectionist. I often sacrificed my time, my health and my comfort for others or for expectations I felt I had to meet. I worked myself into the ground because I thought that was what I was supposed to do in order to be successful. And I acted like it was ok. Like I was ok. ▪️College: Full-time Honors College student (RIP ACT ) also working 3 jobs, even though I was on a full scholarship. ▪️First job out of college: 15 hour days at a job I gave no shits about, but it felt "prestigious" so I did it. ▪️Grad school: Full-time student and full-time work. I prided myself on how much I could pile on without dying. The turning point came during my doctoral program where I made a conscious decision. I had a really tough moment where I realized how much I had sacrificed to get to that point and I was over it. I told myself that day, if I am going to do this, I am going to do it my way and I am going to be a whole person when I leave here. And I did it! I started that day cultivating a life I could be excited to live, making myself and my needs a priority, letting go of people and situations that did not support my growth, and being unapologetically my Black ass amazing self.
