⁣🌏This skull is a cast of Smilodon fatalis, one of the most well-known fossil mammals. This saber-toothed cat lived in the Americas during the Pleistocene epoch (aka the Ice Age ❄️ ) ~2.5 mya to 10,000 years ago. The name "Smilodon" roughly translates to "double-edged knife tooth" and I think you can see why! ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣Smilodon fossils have not been recovered from Montana so far. Fossils of this epic cat have been discovered as far north as Alberta, Canada , so it is possible! In the meantime this skull makes great company. ⁣🌏 ⁣. . . . 🌎Follow my page: @geo_pedia 🌎Follow my page: @geo_pedia 🌎Follow my page: @geo_pedia 🤝Repost: @mary_annings_revenge . . . .⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ #Smilodon #paleontology #prehistoric #paleontologist #sabertoothcat #sabertooth #bigcat #scienceiscool #scicomm #extinct #feline #HowDoYouMuseum #museumfromhome #labrea #tarpits #IceAge #megafauna #womeninSTEM #pleistocene #naturalhistorymuseum #womeninscience #geologyrocks #thisiswhatascientistlookslike 🌏Follow my page: @geo_pedia

Doctor Who fans rejoice! A newly discovered fossil found in Northern Tasmania has been named after the actor Tom Baker, the Fourth Doctor Who. Dr Patrick Smith from the Australian Museum and Dr Malte Ebach from UNSW named the trilobite (an extinct marine animal ) Gravicalymene bakeri. Both scientists are Doctor Who fans and were inspired by Tom Baker’s character to pursue careers in science. Found in the shales of the Gordon Group, Northern Tasmania, the rare trilobite is dated from the Late Ordovician period, part of the Palaeozoic era, approximately 450 million years ago. #australianmuseum #sciencerocks #fossils #science #discovery #doctorwho #research #naturalhistory #naturalhistorymuseum @australian_trilobites @unswscience @unsw

Just in case you missed this kick-ass news... @theoceancollective gets a new fossil named after them! 'Ophiacantha oceani', a new brittle star fossil discovered by palaeontologists Dr. Lea Numberger and Dr. Ben Thuy at the Natural History Museum of Luxembourg ( @naturmusee ) was named after Berlin progressive metal band The Ocean to celebrate their palaeontology-inspired music. "Musicians who so skillfully combine arts and science, composing albums like ‘Precambrian’ (with songs named after the periods of the Precambrian ), ‘Pelagial’ (with songs named after the bathymetric subdivisions of the water column ) and ‘Phanerozoic’ as well as the song ‘Turritopsis dohrnii’ referring to the immortal jellyfish from the Mediterranean, are more than deserving of being immortalized in the fossil record.“ comments Dr. Ben THUY, Natural History Museum Luxembourg Palaeontology - Research & Collections Curator. The abstract states that "Identifiable remains of large deep-sea invertebrates are exceedingly rare in the fossil record. Thus, every new discovery adds to a better understanding of ancient deep-sea environments based on direct fossil evidence.“ The fossil was discovered in 2.6-million-year-old deep-sea sediments of the Mediterranean but its closest living relative is from the Caribbean. Was it the victim of a yet undetected deep-sea extinction event? Keep those ears peeled for some new tunes in the video! And tune into the listening party tomorrow! Link in bio! 🐚 #theoceancollective #progmetal #progressivemetal #prog #metalbladerecords #metalblade #ophiacanthaoceani #naturalhistorymuseum #fossils

Floating Kokodama, Manchester Museum Manchester Museum, located on Oxford Road amongst the ̶H̶o̶g̶w̶a̶r̶t̶s̶ University of Manchester Buildings and holds many treasures inside. The museum is large enough to have impressive natural history exhibits, Egyptian exhibits, Roman Exhibits and a living creatures exhibit, but small enough that your brain still works after a whizz round. On the top floor is the little greenhouse full of wierd looking plants. This palm is floating.... Is that Charms class with prof Flitwick or Herbology with prof Sprout? 10 mins on foot from Oxford Road station, 30 mins from a tram from town centre or any bus up/down Oxford Road. Hop off at the university. #manchester #greenthumb #gardening #garden #greenhouse #history #naturalhistory #naturalhistorymuseum #manchestermuseum #mcr #harrypotter #botany #glasshouse #fallowfield #UoM #universityofmanchester #hogwarts

A little #throwbackthursday to my time in Wyoming last summer at the Wyoming Dinosaur Center @dinogram307 This is one of the enormous dorsal (back ) vertebrae of Jimbo the Supersaurus, a superstar sauropod 🦕 found in Wyoming. (It is a cast of the original specimen that is super heavy! ) I miss Wyoming and digging up dinosaurs. ⚒️ EDIT... I am seriously shattered, working all day and have been informed that today is Wednesday. 🤦🏻‍♂️ Enjoy your pre-throwbackthursday 😅🤣 #fossil #fossilhunter #fossils #paleontology #palaeontology #paleontologist #nature #Jurassic #dinosaur #jurassicpark #prehistoric #ancient #ammonite #evolution #extinct #animals #geology #collecting #dinosaursofinstagram #fossilhunting #naturalhistorymuseum #museum #dinosaurs

“When you grow up people stop asking you what your favorite dinosaur is. They don’t even care.” [slide 2 alt text]. ———— but i do—i care. so— ———— q: what’s your favorite dinosaur? ———— i love thunder lizards because they’re herbivores like me (they eat puzzlegrass—how cute is that?? ) and also the land before time was my favorite film as a child (yeah, even as a child i gravitated toward eviscerating emotional stories lol ). they don’t chew their food, either. instead, they had stones in their stomachs called gastroliths that aided in their food digestion. they could live up to (maybe even over ) 100 years of age, and they also love mild climates with plenty of warm rain and sunshine that allow for thriving plant life. 🌿🦕 rain is my favorite type of weather and petrichor is my fav scent. i was also born during the japanese rainy season ☔️ so i feel an innate kinship with my thunder lizards, you know? ⛈ ———— pullover from @sciencemuseummn ; slide 2 via @ologies fb group.

Something a little different in the fact it is not dinosaur related, but still something really cool which I wanted to share. This is an opalised bird tooth found in Australia. Fossils like this are formed in this unique blue, yellow and green colour in a similar way to how other fossils are formed, however these are preserved in silica as opposed to agate, pyrite or limestone. Opalisation in fossils can happen in one of two ways: - Internal details not preserved. Opal starts as silica dissolved in water. When the silica solution fills an empty cavity left by a shell or bone that has rotted away, it may harden to form a opalised cast of the original object. In this case a dinosaur tooth. Outside features are there but internal structures are not. - Internal details preserved. If the silica seeps in to the organic material before it decomposes then the molecules can be replaced by silica. This preserves the fine details inside the structure. . Lightning ridge of Australia is the only place in the world that produces opalised bones and fossils. #opal #fossil #tooth #dinosaur #dinosaurtooth #opalisedfossils #theropod #theropodtooth #fossiltooth #fossilcollection #fossilcollector #collector #collection #museum #museumofinstagram #australia #australianmuseum #igdaily #fossiloftheday #photooftheday #museumofnaturalhistory #naturalhistory #naturalhistorymuseum #fossilhunt #fossilhunter #newsouthwales #newsouthwalesaustralia #lightningridge #lightningridgeopal #dinohunter

We’re excited to welcome everyone safely back to the Museum today! 🎉 For many of our visitors, the Rotunda is the first hall they will step foot into. It’s a grand space and an interior New York City landmark—but it’s best known for the iconic dinosaur exhibit at its center. In a dramatic representation of an imagined prehistoric encounter between predator and prey, a Barosaurus rears up to protect its young from an attacking Allosaurus. The enormous Barosaurus is the world’s tallest freestanding dinosaur mount. It’s composed of casts of real bone, since fossils are too heavy to support in this way.🦕 Photo: AMNH
