One year ago exactly today, I visited San Juan Island, WA. I would like to thank Sara @ hysazu, Alan, and Zoey for the amazing experience I’ve ever had in my life. It was so fun to go whale watching and seeing about 22 Bigg’s orcas!!!!!! The next day we left on 7/4, the Southern Residents came back to SJI : ) ) but I was so happy!!!!!!!! I believe more J, L SRKWs are coming back soon to see those beautiful friends to say hello!!!! I will go again once this pandemic is over. “Salmon are Life”!!! @orcawatcher @orcabehavior @hysazu

I have posted previously about the Southern Resident Orcas (SROs ), a fish-eating ecotype which depend on Chinook /King Salmon as over 90% of their diet. Mainly because dams, especially the 4 Lower Snake River Dams (4LSRD ) have severely impacted spawning, their🐟numbers have been down to ~1%❗️Along with the salmon these magnificent Orca are ENDANGERED dwindling to now only 72 left. I wish this wasn't true, but this iconic male Mega (L41 ) who has fathered 21 offspring has been announced presumed dead very likely due to starvation, which has been the main cause of death in over a decade of declining Chinook/King Salmon populations. Mega was sure to many of the SROs, and did not live as long as male SROs have in the past. We all must keep speaking up and taking all actions for "our" SROrcas! 🌊🐳🙏🏽💙+✊🏽✊🏽✊🏽Please go to link in my bio for action letters to BREACH the 4 Lower Snake River Dams!!💦PNW CALL to ACTION: Join all or any days of "March for the Dams" 1-22 March 2020 begins in Portland. ✊🏽information at www.marchforthedams.com 👊🏽AND please consider boycotting Salmon for starters. 🌊🌊🌊Rest in Power 💙Mega🐳💦💙🙏🏽 #savethesouthernresidentorcas #l41 #lpod #l41mega #breachthedams #4lsrds #deadbeatdams #damnation #artifishal #orcas #savetheorcas #orcinusorca #coextinctionfilm #killerwhales . . . 📷photo: #mayaslegacywhalewatching

I just returned from an amazing, bucket list trip, to the San Juan Islands. To say it exceeded expectations is an understatement. Saturday was the day dreams are made of and at one point I teared up because it was so perfect. The sound of the whales breathing brought me to tears. The Resident L Pod hadn’t been to the area since January or seen at Lime Kiln since last fall. Our chances weren’t good of seeing them, at all. And then, they came in the night we all arrived! Talk about incredible timing. The sad fact is, it shouldn’t be this way. They are having to travel farther and wider in the search of food because they are starving. I cannot thank @sjiwhalewatch @hysazu @tspesak and @slatermoorephotography enough for sharing your passion and knowledge with us for these precious and powerful creatures. You have created even more advocates, for certain! I can’t wait to be back and do all I can to ensure the Residents are there when I do. Thank you for a trip of a lifetime! • San Juan Island, Washington . . #lpod #kpod #southernresidentorcas #protecttheocean #salmonislife #sanjuanislands #mayaslegacywhalewatching #bucketlisttravel #adventure #getoutside #travel #igphoto #solotravel #wanderingmoms #travelingmoms

#orcawhales #whale #whalewatch #orca #mayaslegacywhalewatching #canada #usa #whalesafari #ocean #ruexpedition

In our contemporary culture, orcas are often viewed for their entertainment value or focus of scientific study. Today, as I watched these creatures off the west coast of the San Juan’s, I remembered reading a Native American story called “Storm Boy” which evoked a feeling of mystery, wonder and respect for orcas as a separate culture that parallels our own. ******************************************************In the story, a little boy is fishing and gets thrown from his boat when a storm hits. He awakes to find himself ashore a strange world with large creatures that teach him to dance and welcome him with open arms into their village. The boy is happy until one day he starts to miss his other family, and the creatures tell him to hold their hands, close his eyes and think hard about his family. The boy does, and all of a sudden feels himself being lifted up through the water to the surface by an orca. He awakes ashore his home village’s beach where people come running to see him. Feeling it was only a day, he finds in reality he had been gone a whole year, but is reunited with his family. ******************************************************The word for Killer whale in Haida is “Sgan”, which means “supernatural”. They say that when you go underwater to visit the territory of the whales, it’s no different from being on land, except that because you’re in their world you see them as humans. This was a profoundly beautiful tale that I just wanted to share. These creatures deserve to be treated with respect, as do all living things. Our balance with nature is so fragile. 🌊💙 ***************************************************** #sanjuan #sanjuanislands #fridayharbor #limekilnstatepark #orcas #orca #orcawhale #killerwhales #mayaslegacywhalewatching #mayaslegacy #whales #whalewatching #whalewatchingtour #stormboy #wildlifephotography #washingtonstate #cetaceans

Orca pod sighting!! Did you know males stay with their mothers their whole lives?? So the mother is the head of the pod. We saw a family of 5, including 2 babies..you can see them at the end of the video! This pod came all the way from Alaska and is a rarity in the San Juan’s—they are mammal eating Orcas (vs. salmon/fish eating Orcas ) 🐳🐳🐳🐳🐳 #orcas #southerngulfislands #mayaslegacywhalewatching #july2019

Sunset over the waters of the Salish Sea in the Pacific Northwest. This was taken from the back of a moving boat, so I had to have a very fast shutter speed (1/2500 ) in order to not blur the background from both boat motion and engine vibration. I normally shoot manual these days, but in this case I switched to shutter priority and let the camera have its way. As expected, I needed to do a fair bit of noise correction in Lightroom. Thankfully, there were not many details to lose! a7riii, 1/2500, f 5.6, I’ll need to look up the other settings - #salishsea #mayaslegacywhalewatching #sanjuanislands #pacificnorthwest #sunset #oceansunset #orangesunset

Hope that you all channel this Harbor Seal’s good vibes today. ✌🏻💕☀️ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Spotted this little sun bather on a wildlife tour with @sjiwhalewatch on Friday. As an animal lover, I was on cloud nine getting to see all sorts of wildlife that call the Salish Sea home. Though there are many of them, and they aren’t hard to find, the Harbor Seals that lounged on the rocks soaking up the sun never failed to make me smile. 🥰 The tour was fantastic - we had a very small group with two naturalists guiding the way, and making sure that we gave the animals 200-400 yards of space so we wouldn’t disrupt them. I highly recommend this tour if you’re in San Juan Island! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #mayaslegacy #mayaslegacywhalewatching #sanjuanislands #sanjuanislandswa #salishsea #pugetsoundlife #pnwonderland #pnwonderdogs #wastateparks #nationalparks #ecotourism #ecofriendlytravel #animallover #harborseal #harborseals #visitseattle #dametraveler #theeverygirltravels #teamkaptainkenny #travelphotography #seattle_igers #travelphotoblog #wanderful_places #mermaiddog #discoverclipper
