Yet, life exists in mud pots such as this one in Solfatara, close to Mount Vesuvius. This hostile environment is the home of microbes that "eat" methane. Researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology, Bremen (DE ), and Radboud University, Nijmegen (NL ), cultivated them in the lab and discovered that their metabolism has a special side effect: It can also convert ammonia. In the process, they produce nitric oxide, a central molecule in the global nitrogen cycle. The scientists now discovered the enzyme that produces nitric oxide, closing an important gap in our understanding of how methanotrophs deal with rising environmental ammonia concentrations. Do you know male humpback whales sing songs? Sometimes for hours and often during mating season! The song can be described as a howl, moan or a cry and can be heard from miles underwater. Scientists believe it is generally done to attract potential mates or to make other male peers aware of their presence. In the 1890s the international whaling commission put a moratorium on whale fishing due to the decreasing worldwide population of whales. After a near-miss with extinction humpback whales are seen to be recovering. A recent study suggests that the south Atlantic humpback population has recovered to its prehistoric population. Isn't that great? 🐋 We need more such regulations to fall in place to stem the damage that we are causing and rejuvenate the oceans and its beautiful lifeforms. This was one of my favourite moments in Malaysia – a morning turtle! 🐢 Green Sea Turtle mothers normally nest at night, but sometimes if you’re lucky, they’ll still be out in the early light. On this particular morning, we got an early wake up call to let us know there was a nesting mother nearby. Turtle mums are very picky when looking for the perfect spot to lay their nest. They’re also very sensitive, and can be disturbed by light, noise or movement. If you’re ever lucky enough to come across a nesting sea turtle, please give her plenty of space and don’t come too close – you might disturb her and cause her to abandon the nest before she’s laid her eggs. This photo was taken after the mother had laid her nest and was ‘camouflaging’ by kicking around sand to disguise the scent of the nest from predators. I’ll post more photos in the coming weeks about the nesting process, relocating the eggs to the hatchery, and waiting for them to hatch, as well as some fun turtle facts. Ok, time to start getting excited. It is only about a couple of weeks until we head away on a 3 week expedition to the Kermadecs! I am going to post a few pix over the next few days from my previous 3 amazing trips to the 'Kerms'. For those who don't know, the Kermadecs are part of New Zealand, they are very remote islands approximately 1000km north east of the North Island. Their remoteness and marine protected status makes them as close to a pristine marine environment as any on earth. They are positioned at the juxtaposition between cooler temperate and tropical water. Kelp is not present (within diving depths anyway ) and coral forms small outcrops but not a full reef. It is full of sharks, primarily Galapogos Sharks and many fish that are extremely rare in NZ are common at the Kerms. The water is usually very clear and the diving is AMAZING!! Dive trips only visit these amazing islands infrequently! . . . Pix is a of a small coral growth with a Kermadec Scalyfin juvenile. . . More Kerms info to come on later posts! . . #seacologynz #teammiromiro #underwaternz #underwaterphotography #nikonnz #nauticam #uwpix #uwpic #scuba #nikon #d850 #marinescience #marinereserves #marineecology #marinebiology #marine #raoulisland #kermadecs #kermadecislands #newzealand #nz #remotenz #coral #temperate #tropical #ngatikuri

Hello guys, I am Jayne. I'm a student in Marine Science at University and I'm passionate about ocean & environment. I want to share my knowledge with all of you, because life in the ocean is so special. I have always felt connected with the ocean since I'm young. It's totally another world. Some species were already there before the dinosaurs, it's incredible. We need to save our oceans and take care of it. 🌊 I hope you enjoy this page and having fun with me to discover ocean❤ - - - #ocean #biology #university #marinescience #marinebiology #love #passion #snorkeling #divewithme #divewithjayne #jayneocean #happy #oceandiscover #sea #species #diving #saveouroceans #nature #wildlife #webscience #sharingknowledge #water #blue #oceanlife #oceanlifematters #nationalpark #protectourocean #lifesgood #lifeunderwater #exploring

Check out this beautiful art made by the ocean!! 💧🌊💦. To me, the first picture looks like the tree of life, which got me thinking about....... . STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math ) and STEAM (add Art ) usually both mean engaging hands-on learning and in our opinion it doesn’t matter which is the focus, but the picture shows a reason to include art. Art inspiration and curiosity can be the initial exploration that leads into the other components of STEAM learning for any age group. The pictures inspired me to wonder about coastal dynamics 🌊, water flow💦, erosion🌬, patterns❄️, math connections🔢🐌, and fashion design🦋. What do you think about? What do you see? . #commontides #art #oceanart #math #nature #ocean #coast #education #stemeducation #steameducation #intern #internship #marinescience #marinebiology

Plastic pollution is the real danger! 🦈 ~ A new study co-authored by the awesome @microplasticsmatter [link in her bio for a PDF version of their paper] estimated that by 2030, we could spew between 20 - 53 million tonnes of plastic into rivers, lakes & oceans every year❗️EVEN more alarming: this estimate is based on an ambitious scenario where ALL current commitments to reduce plastic pollution are met by governments around the world! ~ This is a serious wake up call! We cannot continue like this ❌ Whilst it’s system change that we desperately need, individual attitudes and action can make a difference... SO, if you’re based in the UK & want to join an event that has been leading the way in tackling ocean pollution for the past 26 years, get involved with the @mcs_uk ’s Great British Beach Clean this week (18th - 25th Sept ) 🇬🇧 ~ AMAZING top from @thedeephull 🥤🐢 🌊
