Establishing a standardized group of physical performance tests a.k.a. functional assessments is therefore mandated especially given the relatively predictable performance demands of #running While we have some normative data on the #heel raise test across different age populations thanks to Herbert-Losier et al., there is still a lack of standardization when it comes to performing this seemingly straightforward assessment. In this 📽🎬 I’m demonstrating my preferred method to get the most information out of this assessment. By no means does one need a slant board as several other objects act as a perfectly viable substitute (i.e. bumper plate ) so long as it approximates a 10° incline based off of the work of Dr. Silbernagel et al. (2006 & 2010 ). 🤓 It’s also important to perform these #calf raises in a rhythmic manner 🥁🥁🥁. 30 bpms is often cited in the literature 📖 so that’s what I stick with (blame game 😉 ) as it demands slow, focal loading. Appreciate that this is more of an #endurance type test as opposed to a pure #strength or #power based assessment. Ideally a battery of tests would be ideal when it comes to evaluating lower #leg function to gain a global lens into things. Be strict as hell with this assessment 🧐. The moment the performer loses rhythm, can no longer work through the full range, or cramps thereby interfering with the test it’s a wrap. Lastly, remember to have the performer focus on moving in a vertical direction towards the ceiling or sky while also emphasizing maintaining contact with the ball of the foot 🦶🏽to prevent them from rolling to the outer aspect of the foot which is a routine compensation.
