This week for #JaneAwesomeWednesday is @nonsense .and.sensibility's prompt, "Best Book to Screen Adaption". My winner is the 2009 BBC version of Emma, starring @ramolagarai and @jonnylmiller . It's just so well cast! 😍 All four hours are totally worth repeated viewing. (Ask me how I know. 😉🍿🍰🌦️ ) . PLUS, it's currently September and the weather's getting a tad brisk, so I think we might be officially in cozy sweatshirt season! ☺️☕ . ☕ Have you seen this version of Emma? For the #JaneAwesomeWednesday prompt "The Worst Austen Villain,” I nominate Mrs. Norris. I gave a presentation on Mansfield Park to my local #jasna group and our favorite part was dissecting the true villain of the book: Aunt Norris!🤯 🍃⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Mrs. Norris is manipulative, greedy, and utterly selfish, and she makes it her aim in life to keep Fanny down and make her feel insignificant every minute of every day. Sending her on errands, setting her apart from her cousins, treating her like a servant. Ugh! 🍃 I wrote an entire chapter on Mrs. Norris in my book Praying with Jane as an example of a Christian in name alone. 🍃⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Does Mrs. Norris make your blood boil? Maybe it's just me. Who would you choose for Austen's Worst Villain? 🍃⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🍃⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🍃⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #JaneAusten #mansfieldpark #fannyprice #janeaustenquotes #thisjaneaustenlife #austenland #bookquotes #bookquoteoftheday #senseandsensibility #bibliophile #anglophile #janeaustensworld #janeausten #prideandprejudice #bookish #bookishallure #bookishfeatures #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookworm #bookaccount #northanherabbey #booksbooksbooks #senseandsensibility #literaryvillains #classicliterature

Hello and happy #JaneAwesomeWednesday 🖤 Today's prompt is "The Worst Austen Villain". I was torn between John Thorpe (yeee ) and Fanny Dashwood, but finally settled for the latter. While Thorpe is an insufferable brute, Fanny Dashwood is cold-hearted, manipulative and greedy - which makes her THE WORST for me 🙈 From the very beginning of Sense and Sensibility she is shown as cunning and mean, persuading her husband to a ) disregard his father's final wish, b ) break a promise made at his deathbed and c ) leave his extended family in a destitute situation. I can only make it through this scene due to Austen's amazing writing and cling to overanalyzing to avoid becoming ~emotional~. Eh ... Perfectly dreadful 😅 ~~~ Before I upload the new prompts, I have to to say how much I enjoyed this month! Thanks for the beautiful, beautiful photos and clever captions. I loved reading your elaborate responses and now see some characters in a new light. This was so great!!! Hello and happy #JaneAwesomeWednesday ! 🎉 Today's prompt is "Not Really a Villain - Victim of Circumstances". I nominate Jane Fairfax, who is made out to be an antagonist by Emma out of jealously and malicious manipulation by *beeeep*/spoiler. 🤫 Poor Jane! And also: How funny Austen should lend this character her own name, isn't it?! ~~~ "Emma was sorry to have to pay civilities to a person she did not like through three long months! to be always doing more than she wished, and less than she ought! Why she did not like Jane Fairfax might be a difficult question to answer; Mr. Knightley had once told her it was because she saw in her the really accomplished young woman which she wanted to be thought herself [...]" . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #JaneAusten #mrdarcy #senseandsensibility #doverthrifteditions #bibliophile #anglophile #janeaustensworld #janeausten #biography #prideandprejudice #bookish #bookishallure #bookishfeatures #bookstagram #bookstagrammer # #bookworm #bookaccount #bookblog #northanherabbey #booksbooksbooks #booksandflowers #flatlay #bookflatlay #antiquarianbookcollector #penguinthreads #antiquarianbooks #janefairfax #emma

Who's your favourite antagonist in the Austen world and beyond? ~~~ Hello and happy #JaneAwesomeWednesday ! 🎉 Today's prompt is "Love to Hate: A Character that is Wonderfully Unlikeable". I didn't have to think too long about that: My favourite Austen villain by far is Lady Catherine De Bourgh. She's so pompous and over the top that it borders on the caricaturesque. 💃💃 Her snarky comments and impolite transgressions are garnished with a fair dose of silliness making her a First-Class-Antagonist - in my book at least. 🤭 Here's a favourite quote: “If you are speaking of music ... it is of all subjects my delight. There are few people in England I suppose, who have more true enjoyment of music than myself, or a better natural taste. If I had ever learnt, I should have been a great proficient." #micdrop #thatlastsentencethough 💃💃💃 ~~~ Fun fact: I once played Lady C on a murder mystery night. It was not the best casting thought, too giggly 😅🙈 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #JaneAusten #mrdarcy #senseandsensibility #doverthrifteditions #bibliophile #anglophile #janeaustensworld #janeausten #biography #prideandprejudice #bookish #bookishallure #bookishfeatures #bookstagram #bookstagrammer # #bookworm #bookaccount #bookblog #northanherabbey #booksbooksbooks #booksandflowers #flatlay #bookflatlay #antiquarianbookcollector #mrdarcy #antiquarianbooks #catherinedebourgh #ladycatherine

Are you collecting something? Maybe even something other than books? ~~~ Hello and happy #JaneAwesomeWednesday 🎉 Today's prompt is "Catherine Morland - Your Favourite Book Merch". I found it hard to pick just one item since I have a terrible soft spot for "anything Austen". You can see some of my favourite articles on the following slide or in this weird reel-video I did 😇 ~~~ "It is only a novel... or, in short, only some work in which the greatest powers of the mind are displayed, in which the most thorough knowledge of human nature, the happiest delineation of its varieties, the liveliest effusions of wit and humour, are conveyed to the world in the best-chosen language." - Jane Austen, NORTHANGER ABBEY (I love all the book and reading quotes in NA 😍😍 ) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #JaneAusten #mrdarcy #senseandsensibility #brocklithographeditions #bibliophile #anglophile #janeaustensworld #janeausten #biography #bookstack #prideandprejudice #bookish #bookishallure #bookishfeatures #bookstagram #bookstagrammer # #bookworm #bookaccount #bookblog #northanherabbey #booksbooksbooks #booksandflowers #flatlay #bookflatlay #booksandtea #antiquarianbookcollector #mrdarcy #antiquarianbooks #Antiquarian

I couldn't resist this epilogue to "A Stern, Disagreeable Countenance." If Jane Austen had wanted to write a pitiable shy-guy Darcy, she would have. Actually, she kind of did. Austen created an awkward Darcy whose reserve arose from shyness, embarrassment, and nervousness. This Darcy speaks little for fear of saying the wrong thing, yet is gentle, unassuming, and sweet underneath.  It just isn't Mr. Darcy.  Georgiana Darcy, like Fitzwilliam Darcy, appears proud and reserved.  But unlike her brother, Miss Darcy is not at all proud.  Her reserve actually comes from "shyness and fear of doing wrong." She is generally civil but often embarrassed and silent. On Elizabeth's visit to Pemberley, Miss Darcy forgets that she needs to lead the party when food is served, and during the morning's conversation, "Miss Darcy looked as if she wished for courage enough to join in it; and sometimes did venture a short sentence when there was least danger of its being heard." Elizabeth immediately sees that Georgiana is not proud, but shy and awkward. She lacks the skill - as many people do, especially at 16 - of making other people feel at ease, since she is not at ease herself. Because of her high rank, this is perceived by lower-ranking people as pride. On that same visit, this is vividly contrasted with Miss Bingley's and Mrs. Hurst's intentional coldness. ~~~ #Rezensionsexemplar

3/3 from Emma Tiner: "Understanding Mr. Darcy's Repellent Charms." Full article series found at roadstainedfeet.wordpress.com.  For an essay that purports to understand Darcy, I know I have spent a good deal of time writing about how other characters. I believe, however, that debunking some of the subtler misunderstandings that crop up as we read or watch the story unfold helps reveal Darcy’s true nature. This last segment of my analysis considers who Darcy is at the story’s joyful conclusion. I note, foremost, that Darcy does apologize for his mistakes—for his pride, his assumptions, and his imposition of his worldview on Elizabeth. He says, The recollection of what I then said, of my conduct, my manners, my expressions during the whole of it, is now, and has been many months, inexpressibly painful to me. Your reproof, so well applied, I shall never forget: ‘had you behaved in a more gentlemanlike manner.’ Those were your words. You know not, you can scarcely conceive, how they have tortured me;—though it was some time, I confess, before I was reasonable enough to allow their justice. Darcy is not afraid to reflect on the rightness of his actions, and the truth of the convictions underlying them. However, he does not apologize for every element of his conduct throughout the story—nor does he resolve to be a man of different manners henceforth, in every situation. He does not, in other words, thank Elizabeth for making him no longer awkward, no longer uncivilized, no longer reserved in company. Rather, he realizes the wrong he did her, and seeks to amend that. This is important, not because I am eager to excuse Darcy for true arrogance, or for a sense of elite entitlement, but because, as this essay has tried to show, Darcy didn’t begin the story as a brute or wallflower. If Darcy’s manners were truly those of an ill-adjusted, unaware, boorish individual, then Elizabeth (and we ) would not consider the development of their dynamic to be a discovery of his true character. She (and we ) would see it as a total transformation; a conversion, of sorts, from unfounded pride to affectionate humility. Continued in the comments.

2/3 from Emma Tiner, "Understanding Mr. Darcy's Repellent Charms." Full article series found at roadstainedfeet.wordpress.com UNRELIABLE NARRATORS: WHY ARE WE LISTENING TO MRS. BENNET? “[Mrs. Bennet] related, with much bitterness of spirit and some exaggeration, the shocking rudeness of Mr. Darcy. “But I can assure you,” she added, “that Lizzy does not lose much by not suiting his fancy; for he is a most disagreeable, horrid man, not at all worth pleasing. So high and so conceited that there was no enduring him! He walked here, and he walked there, fancying himself so very great! Not handsome enough to dance with! . . . I quite detest the man.” The priorities of Mrs. Bennet, most of her daughters, Mrs. Long, the Lucases, and even Mr. Bingley, are all somewhat aligned. The opening “truth” is that young and good-mannered people are obliged to mingle in society in the interest of finding a partner, who, though first joined in dance, may soon be joined in marriage. Mr. Darcy does not profess this truth, nor does he live by it. Like Elizabeth, he is not interested in making the first “eligible” match that comes his way. Unlike Elizabeth, he has money and status as a wealthy, land-owning man. But is it really a surprise, that Darcy, who can’t enter a room without having people gloat over his wealth and eye him as a promising catch, doesn’t have much interest in making connections? He does not need to meet anyone in this room, and since he has no use for flattery (unlike his aunt, Lady Catherine ), he does not want to meet anyone in this room! We need not—then or now, in fact or in fiction—be overly sympathetic to the affluent, but Darcy isn’t asking for our sympathy. He doesn’t want to be at this party of social-climbing strangers, he doesn’t want to feed the gossip-mill by dancing with every woman in the room, and he doesn’t much enjoy the company of inferior minds. 1/3 From Emma Tiner, "Understanding Mr. Darcy's Repellent Charms," Full article series found at roadstainedfeet.wordpress.com.  Popularity breeds misunderstanding. Maybe that is what Fitzwilliam Darcy, enduring though fictional, was afraid of when he remarked that “[t]he wisest and the best of men—nay, the wisest and best of their actions—may be rendered ridiculous by a person whose first object in life is a joke.” Our introduction to him as the unlikely hero of Pride and Prejudice (originally titled First Impressions ) presents a man who is, for better or worse, reserved. That reserve is tested and transformed by his connection with Elizabeth Bennet. On a meta-level, outside the novel’s frame, his reserve has been reinterpreted and translated to suit the fancies of a shifting audience. There are many theories floating in the ether of Internet commentary, which tend either to glamorize or humanize Darcy’s every tic and tactic. Though spirited opposition could be posed to almost every listicle entry, the cultural understanding of Darcy in a post-MacFadyen world has yielded what, in this author’s view, is a particularly inaccurate take. Namely, that, to avoid labeling Mr. Darcy unconscionably rude, we may only excuse his conduct as that of a socially awkward puppy. Not an actual puppy, of course. This isn’t Teen Wolf. But consider the central premise of a Tumblr post (authored by a now deactivated user named beeftea78 ) which garnered more than 22,000 notes: “I adore Mr. Darcy with all my heart, I merely object to the way he’s popularly associated with the image of this perfect, brooding hunk, when really he’s just a socially awkward loser.” Don’t worry, proponents of this theory aver—they love the man, but they know exactly how he deserves to be mocked. “Socially awkward loser” Darcy is rude, yes, but only because he is bumbling, shy, and stiff. Does he evince such traits out of fear? Does he cling to his friend Mr. Bingley because at least there is one fool he can control? Do all the moments preceding his sudden expressions of warmth at Pemberley merely represent cries for help? Continued in comments.

Hello and happy #JaneAwesomeWednesday ! 🎉 Today’s prompt is „Your Favourite Spin-Off“. I thought it would be a nice way to conclude the month – until I had to settle on a book lol. 😂 (Btw: New prompts! Swipe right to see 💓 ) . . THE JANE AUSTEN BOOK CLUB is probably not my ultimate favourite, but it has a special place in my heart, because it was the very first spin-off I've ever read and also because I love the premise: Six people coming together, discussing Jane Austen’s work and reflecting on their own life along the way. - What's not to love about this? 😍 My personal highlight is a question section at the end of the book and I would like to end this post with one of them: . . “Jane Austen’s books were initially published without the author’s name and tagged ‘An Interesting Book’, which alerted the reader that romance was involved. If Austen were publishing today, would she be considered a romance writer?” - What do you think?? . . . . (Sidenote 1: Definitely stealing this term for future reviews! 😅 Sidenote 2: How gorgeous is this cover? I had another edition but traded it for this beauty. //////English caption ⬇️ Belgian style is today's chosen one, simple and beautiful, it enables mixing materials and colors. This style brings me kind memories about those afternoons of bookbinding and chill. My friend don Rafa, taught us this technique and it keeps its place into general public favorites. . This quote of #JaneAusten couldn't be more true now than ever, it's hard to understand what other communities have been living and feeling when you aren't part of it. ///////////////English caption ⬇️ This notebook is a mix of styles, I’ll bet already has a name, bookbinding issues! 🤷🏻‍♀️ it would be fun to read some suggestions for this style in the comments :D . Drawing the sewing pattern is so fun for me, mathematics are fun when you can see them in real life as a book! . BTW the quote for today’s book is so true, we must remember it always, especially in these troubled times,Let our actions be stronger and kinder than our words and thoughts. #JaneAusten was a formidable writer, it’s been a pleasure for me to making these books inspired on her. . #bookbinding #notebook #encuadernacion #fabric #paperlove #DIY #book #handmade #hechoamano #journal #handmadebook #handmadesketchbook #handmadenotebook #handboundbook #imakebooks #makingbooks #bookart #paperlove #stationerylover #stationeryaddict #creativesoul #gouachepainting #janeausten #janeaustenquotes #ElMundodeJaneAusten #JaneAustensWorld #outdoors

//////////English caption ⬇️ Coptic + weave style, but most important than that: #JusticeforGeorgeFloyd #Blacklivesmatter . Not more indifference, no more weak actions or neutrality against hate and violence. They want us voiceless and powerless, but it’s now when our voices need to be stronger, united besides black community and minorities. . Tonight, here in Columbus we have citywide curfew until tomorrow at 6:00 a.m. The fear of protesting is real but being indifferent is not the answer. Time for Bradel style, the rounded spine gives it so much charm. This style has elegance and simplicity that I like very much. I learned this technique years ago from one marvelous bookbinding teacher: Rafael Ángel Varela @taller_rafa . We used to get together on Saturday afternoon with a few friends to learn new styles and share tips, but mostly to spend a good time. . Those afternoons left me many friends that are still with me, every time I do bookbinding. . The book’s pages keep stories, but also do the bookbinding art itself, the company, the spirit in the workshop, makes you match memories and people faces with each style. I miss teaching and learning from others, maybe I’m getting closer to that goal with every one of these #notebooks . . . . #bookbinding #notebook #encuadernacion #fabric #paperlove #DIY #book #handmade #hechoamano #journal #handmadebook #handmadesketchbook #handmadenotebook #handboundbook #gouache #imakebooks #makingbooks #bookart #paperlove #stationerylover #stationeryaddict #creativesoul #gouachepainting #janeausten #janeaustenquotes #ElMundodeJaneAusten #JaneAustensWorld

///////English caption ⬇️ One more addition to #JaneAustensWorld collection, this time a #buttonhole stitch was the chosen one. This style is marvelous, I really like it. I made a pattern for the pastedown endpapers, and boy! They look so fancy in the inside but in the outside too! . BTW, all the pictures for the book’s collection are from my husband @pepino_de_mar . ///////English caption ⬇️ An old known friend: #copticstyle , one of my favorite techniques added to my personal project #JaneAustensWorld . This sewing is tricky not only because it needs practice, but because there are so many variations to do it, and if you want to improve, the best is try as many as you can. Every time I do this style, I find new secrets, maybe that’s the beauty of it: never stop learning, even about the things you thought you already mastered. . #bookbinding #notebook #encuadernacion #fabric #paperlove #book #handmade #hechoamano #journal #handmadebook #handmadenotebook #handboundbook #imakebooks #makingbooks #bookart #paperlove #stationerylover #stationeryaddict #creativesoul #janeausten #gouachepainting #materials #pride &prejudice #janeaustenquote

Los siguientes cuadernos ya están listos y pronto estarán publicados por acá 😉 /////////English caption ⬇️ Here’s the first book style of my personal project #JaneAustensWorld . Let’s remember my rules: using the same fabric, final size and paper, also neutral colors. As a good designer, I did research to define quotes to use and the leitmotif to be used in each one of the notebooks to follow. This one is a simplification of flowers, painted by hand with gouache, unifying the books into a collection. . This book is a #quarterbound style, made with golden book cloth and squared spine, the covers are reinforced, making this guy extra strong. I made the calligraphic quote with brush, looking for a old-letter kind of look. Hope you like it and wait eagerly for the next ones, I’m looking to post the rest of them soon 😉 . . #bookbinding #notebook #encuadernacion #fabric #paperlove #book #handmade #hechoamano #journal #handmadebook #handmadenotebook #handboundbook #imakebooks #makingbooks #bookart #paperlove #stationerylover #stationeryaddict #creativesoul #janeausten #gouachepainting #materials #pride &prejudice #janeaustenquote

On a scale from 1 to 10, how cool would it be to have Jane Austen as an aunt? 😅🙋‍♀️ ~~~ England, 1810-ish. Fanny Austen and her cousin Anna are introduced into society, their families desperately hope for good matches. While Fanny's mother wishes to have one of her ten children off her hands (think Mrs Bennet ), Anna's family feels the economic pressure of an advantageous arrangement (Hello again ... Mrs Bennet ). At first, both girls are delighted that their ball season is finally coming to a start. But will they find husbands? And is matrimony really the only thing they can hope for..? (Cue the sassy spinster aunt! ) ~~~ My passion for Jane Austen "fanfiction" has only recently been rekindled and this book ticked a lot of the right boxes. I so enjoyed being transported back to the regency period, delighted in the subtle nods to Jane Austen's work and just loved every appearance "Aunt Jane" made. Admittedly, some other scenes were so YA I couldn't help rolling my eyes, but then again, this is the target audience, so I shan't complain 😅 Still a charming and wonderfully diverting book on the Austen-family, female destinies and amazing aunties. Very well-researched (no surprise there! ) and well-written. Bonus points for the usage of my favourite phrase: "as cool as a cucumber". 😂🥒😎 ~~~ Read this if you liked: • Cora Harrison: Jane Austen Was My Best Friend (! ) • Lucy Worsley: Jane Austen at Home • Syrie James: The Lost Memoir of Jane Austen ~~~ Thanks to @bloomsburypublishing  for the proof copy. #gifted . . . . . . . . . . . . . #TheAustenGirls #lucyworsley #JaneAusten #janeawesome #bibliophile #anglophile #janeaustensworld #janeausten #prideandprejudice #bookish #bookishallure #bookishfeatures #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookaccount #bookblogger #booksandflowers #mrdarcy #janeite #janeaustenfan #vintage #lettering #JaneAustenSpinoff #IWasJaneAustensBestFriend #JaneAustenAtHome #pink #pinkflatlay #youngadult #romance

"Run mad as often as you choose, but do not faint." ~~~ Hello and happy #JaneAwesomeWednesday 🎉 Today's prompt is "Book and a Relaxing Cup of Tea". This was originally inspired by the quote above and when I decided to include it, it was mainly to honour #InternationalWomensDay - definitely not anticipating how many buckets of calming tea this month would require. Phew! How was March for you? I do hope you are all well 💛💛💛 The prompts for next month are a very light nod to the current events; I didn't want it to become too heavy and thought a bit of humour wouldn't hurt 💛 This being said: I hope you're all safe, keeping a light mind and take refreshing walks around the room every now and then. Take care xxx ~~~ [NEW PROMPTS//ALSO SAVED AS HIGHLIGHT] ~~~ 🌿A FUNNY DESIGN TO MAKE US LAUGH (1 April ) “Follies and nonsense, whims and inconsistencies do divert me, I own, and I laugh at them whenever I can.” ~ 🌿STANDING DISPLAY (8 April ) “Let me persuade you to follow my example, and take a turn about the room. – I assure you it is very refreshing after sitting so long in one attitude.” ~ 🌿FLORAL EDITION (15 April ) “I have just learnt to love a hyacinth.” ~ 🌿PORTRAIT COVER (22 April ) “Her own thoughts and reflections were habitually her best companions.” ~ 🌿JANEITES UNITED: A SMALL PARTY OF BOOKS (29 April ) “The distance is nothing when one has a motive.” ~~~ Let me know what you think of these? 🤗 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #JaneAusten #persuasion #janeawesome #bibliophile #janeaustensworld #prideandprejudice #antiquarian #beautifulbooks #bookishfeatures #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookaccount #bookblogger #senseandsensibility #janeite #austenite #janeaustenfan #vintage #bookflatlay #romance #mansfieldpark #inspirationalquotes #humboldt #alexandervonhumboldt #botany #floraldesign #booksandflowers #booksantea

"Surprises are foolish things. The pleasure is not enhanced, and the inconvenience is often considerable." said Mr. Knightley about Frank Churchill's gift to Jane Fairfax. I hope my surprise to my friend's Birthday, this lovely Jane Austen portrait puzzle, will bring her a lot of pleasure and happy moments during its assembling, because she is huge Austen fan 🎩 It is #janeawesomewednesday hosted by @nonsense .and.sensibility and this week prompt is Mr. Knightley, minimal theme. It's #JaneAwesomeWednesday from @nonsense .and.sensibility! The prompt is Emma: a book-centric arrangement🌷, and I am LOVING this book on Austen-ian charm (which my wonderful mother gave to me ). On another note, I think the film version of Emma starring Ramola Garai and Jonny Lee Miller is excellent. 👍 . . . . . . . . . . . . . #misswoodhouse #janeausten #victorian #chinateacup #janeaustenbooks #janeite #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #janeaustensworld #prompt #igbooks #emma #prideandprejudice #landsend #booksofig #bookclub #englishnovel #britishliterature #classicliterature #classiclitnetwork #pink #bookstacks #booksofig #booklover #jonnyleemiller #ramolagarai #bookish #bookworm #booksbooksbooks #maggielane

"One half of the world cannot understand the pleasures of the other." ~ Jane Austen Jane Austen's World: The Life and Times of England's Most Popular Novelist is the quintessential guide in to Jane's world.  If you've ever wanted to time travel to Regency England ( and what Austen fan hasn't dreamed of doing just that?! ) this is the perfect guide book for what to expect and how to blend in. Maggie Lane covers just about every aspect of Jane's life imaginable. Not only does she write about Jane's family but the food, dress, crafts, education and housekeeping. She discusses the wars and politics, who the movers and shakers were of the times. She covers social life, and who the artists, authors and poets (Cowper! ) were. From this book you could discern what parlor games to play, how to furnish and decorate a home, where to vacation and whether it was better to travel by stage coach or mail coach. This is a great book for those of us who cant get enough of Jane's world. Happy #janeawesomewednesday
