August 8, 1503: The marriage ceremony of King James IV of Scotland and Princess Margaret Tudor of England took place at Holyrood Abbey. The groom was 30 and his bride just 13. Their marriage lasted ten years and had produced two living sons when James IV was killed by the English at the Battle of Flodden. Their eldest surviving son was King James V of Scotland, father of Mary, Queen of Scots and grandfather of the first Stuart King of England, James VI of Scotland and I of England. Every British monarch from 1603 to the present day has been a descendant of this union. Queen Elizabeth II is the 13xgranddaughter of King James IV and Queen Margaret Tudor of Scotland. "The line goes; Margaret Tudor and James IV of Scotland = James V of Scotland = Mary, Queen of Scots = James VI of Scotland/I of England = Elizabeth of Bohemia = Sophia, Electress of Hanover = George I = George II = Frederick, Prince of Wales = George III = Prince Edward, Duke of Kent = Queen Victoria = Edward VII = George V = George VI = Queen Elizabeth II" - The Anne Boleyn Society 'Marriage of James(18th-century imagining of James IV of Scotland and Margaret Tudor; Ruins of Holyrood Abbey; Their 13xgranddaughter Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace, 1953 ) #RoyalWedding #Tudors #HouseOfStuart #HolyroodAbbey #JamesIVOfScotland #MargaretTudor #OnThisDay #historylover #history #historian

The ruins of Holyrood Abbey stand next to the Palace of Holyroodhouse. The abbey was founded by King David I in 1128. It’s adjoining guest house later became a residence for royalty and over time developed into the Palace of Holyroodhouse. The abbey was used as a church up until the 17th century, and then became ruined in the 18th century. The name Holyrood is derived from the Scots word “rood” which means cross, so the name is essentially “Holy Cross.” Many royals and others of high status are buried here.⠀ .⠀ .⠀ #HolyroodAbbey #Holyrood #Edinburgh #EdinburghCity #VisitEdinburgh #IG_Edinburgh #ExploreEdinburgh #EdinburghClicks #UnlimitedEdinburgh #DiscoverEdinburgh #ThisIsEdinburgh #InstaEdinburgh #Scotland #Alba #Schottland #Escocia #Ecosse #VisitScotland #ThisIsScotland #ScotlandShots #SimplyScotland #ExploreScotland #ScotlandTravel #DiscoverScotland #ScotlandClicks #InstaScotland #UnlimitedScotland #IGScotland

The Holyrood Abbey that’s attached to Holyrood Palace, the Queens Scottish residence. The Abbey was founded in 1128 by King David l. Located at the bottom of the Royal Mile in Edinburgh. I explored this gorgeous place with my dad over Christmas 2019. Highly recommend visiting the abbey and palace if you are ever in the area!! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 . . . . #landofscotland #scotland #visitscotland #abbey #holyroodabbey #holyroodpalace #ruins #royalmile #queenspalace #history

Today in history: 3 August 1460 - King James II of Scotland is killed when one of his large cannon, known as "the Lion", exploded while laying siege to Roxburgh Castle. He is laid to rest in Holyrood Abbey. 1492 - Christopher Columbus departs Spain on his first voyage to discover the western route to India. He has 3 ships, the Niña, Pinta and Santa María. 1583 - Explorer Sir Humphrey Gilbert arrives at St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada, and claims it for Queen Elizabeth I of England. 1914 - Germany declares war on France and invades neutral Belgium, beginning World War 1. 1943 - Lieutenant General George S. Patton strikes a soldier suffering from combat related stress or "shell shock". General Dwight D. Eisenhower ordered Patton to apologise. Eisenhower then used the incident to send false information, Operation Fortitude, to German agents stating that Patton would be leading an invasion of Europe. This allowed Eisenhower to make preparations for the D-Day landings in relative secrecy while German agents were distracted with Patton. 1958 - U.S. nuclear submarine, Nautilus, achieves the first undersea voyage of the North Pole. #otd #onthisdayinhistory #OTD #OnThisDay #history #kingjamesiiofscotland #roxburghcastle #roxburgh #scotland #holyroodabbey #christophercolumbus #spain #newfoundland #sirhumphreygilbert #canada #ww1 #WW1 #belgium #france #generalpatton #generaleisenhower #operationfortitude #nautilus #northpole #ddaylandings #elizabethiofengland

#missthis #holyroodabbey #edinburgh #tb #holyroodpalace #justthinkaboutit

Holyrood House is where the 1.6 mile long royal mile street ends, in the Old Town of Edinburgh. This is a picture of ruins of Holyrood Abbey, a part of the palace of Holyrood House. Rood in old Scots language means cross, hence the name means 'Holy Cross'. The Abbey Church has been in ruins since the 18th century, where the structure remains devoid of roof. . . #holyroodhousepalace #holyroodhouse #holyroodpalace #holyroodabbey #palaceofholyroodhouse #edinburgh #Scotland #scottish #ancientruins #uk #uktrip #europe #eurotrip #europetravel #europeansummer #royalmile #royalmileedinburgh #ancientarchitecture #ancientruins #ruinsofscotland #vagabondduo #vacation #traveleatrepeat #travelfeastrepeat #exploretheworld #traveltheworld #exploringonfoot

Reposted from @myinstascotland Holyrood Abbey, Edinburgh. . The Augustinian Abbey of Holyrood was founded by David I in 1128 as a daughter-house of Merton Priory (Surrey ). By the 15th century the abbey was increasingly being used as a royal residence – James II was born there in 1430 - and by the time of the Protestant Reformation (1560 ) much of the monastic precinct had been subsumed into the embryonic Palace of Holyroodhouse. . At the Reformation the east end of the church became redundant (it was demolished in 1570 ), whilst the nave continued in use as the parish church of Canongate; Charles I was crowned therein in 1633. In 1687 the parishioners relocated to a new church in Canongate to enable James VII to convert the nave into the Chapel Royal of the revived Order of the Thistle. It was wrecked the following year by a mob, who destroyed the fittings, and broke into the royal vault. Following misguided repairs in 1758 the roof collapsed ten years later. . #holyroodabbey #historicscotland #edinburgh #myedinburgh #thisisedinburgh #instaedinburgh #loveedinburgh #igersedinburgh #explorescotland #loves_scotland #lovescotland #monumental_world #visitscotland #edinburghstory #scotland #scotlandlover #scotland_greatshots #instascotland #igscotland #ig_scotland #icu_scotland #scotland_insta #traveling_uk #scotland #wonderlustscotland #hiddenscotland #traveling_scotland #earthpix #scozia #scotlandscenery

“My heart is my own.” ↟ ↟ ↟ 📍 Holyrood Abbey, Edinburgh, Scotland, 2016 ↟ ↟ ↟ The story behind Holyrood Abbey goes something like, King David, went out hunting during the Feast of the Cross. And after being bucked off his trusty steed, came face to face with a disgruntled stag. ↟ ↟ ↟ The King noticed a crucifix between the stag’s antlers or a Holy Cross projected just as the stag backed away. Needless to say, the stag didn’t maul the King. Grateful, the King saw this as a purely spiritual event and founded Holyrood Abbey in that very area. ↟ ↟ ↟ I’ve always been really fascinated by Mary Queen of Scots. Some see her as a murderer and a traitor while others believe she was a courageous martyr. I tend to lean towards the later. If you are also a fan of Mary Queen of Scots you can’t beat The Palace at Holyrood or Holyrood Abbey. ↟ ↟ ↟ After all, the abbey is where Queen Mary famously married the absolute waste of space Lord Darnley at 22. There is something to be said for the way she followed her heart. And it doesn’t hurt that the ruins of the abbey are stunningly beautiful! ↟ ↟ ↟

Firstly, sorry for the lull. As much as I love this page as an escape from the unreal times that we’re living in, there are times where one just needs a break from technology itself. But I’m back now, and I will continue to post about my little escapes. . This was taken at Holyrood (not Hollywood 😄 ) Abbey on a beautiful summer day. This abbey is located inside Holyroodhouse. The palace is on one end of the royal mile, which connects it to Edinburgh Castle. The mile itself is touristy, but it’s still very beautiful, lively & charming! . Holyroodhouse is where the Queen conducts her engagements in Scotland during the summer. The palace is less opulent than that of its French counterparts, but it’s still quite beautiful and engaging. I’ll post more from the palace in future posts. . The abbey was built by King David I, around 1128 AD. It has been a preserved ruin since 1687 after the Catholic rulers evicted the worshippers. . It was so calming to walk through what used to be a place of worship. That is the magic inherent in ruins - they evoke a sense of time travel, without using a whole lotta science. So, the next time you are in this beautiful city, be sure to visit this splendid little abbey, and experience a very tangible link to the past. @histenvscot @historicscotland . . . . #tb #thewistfultraveller #holyroodabbey #holyroodhouse #edinburgh #royalmile #scotland #uk #visitscotland #uktravel #cityescape #postcardsfromtheworld #explorer #travel #traveller #travelling #travellersofinstagram #travelgram #travelogue #traveldiary #instapic #instatravel #wanderlust #smritstravels
