We are not defined by our past. ⠀ But so often we unconsciously carry our past into the present. This often happens when we overreact to something. Something triggers us & our emotional response to that situation may be disproportionate. Later, when we think about the situation rationally, we may wonder what caused our overreaction, or worse--we may start blaming ourselves for it, feeling shame or guilt. ⠀ When we do that, we're unaware that the way we feel about that present situation is not about some lack of intellectual understanding, rationality, or a personal flaw. ⠀ Its about the imprint that the past has on us. We carry that imprint of the past into the present. With our overreactive response we're not being in the present moment, we relive the old wound being triggered. This response shows that the brain is still patterned with the old ingrained messages when we experienced some painful situation in the past. ⠀ How can we stop reliving the past and not let it trigger us in present? Learning to gradually get more curious about our reactions. Letting go of being judgemental about our emotional reactions, and about other people whose actions towards us also more often reflect their own perception of reality and their own past wounds. ⠀ By accepting that the process of digging out those deep layers of what triggers us is never over. ⠀ Sometimes our emotional reaction is justified by the situation that triggered it. Sometimes not. ⠀ We can learn to recognize that. We can look at any situation closer and recognize that we could have responded to it differently. There could be other possible reactions to that situation ⠀ For example, someone cancelled plans the last moment & let us down. We may react to it feeling angry, disappointed, disrespected. Our ego tells us that it's about us -that we are the reason for him/her acting that way. That's our driving perception of the event. And that perception shaped our reaction. We didn't react to WHAT happened, we reacted to HOW we perceived what happened. Our interpretation was chosen by our past. ⠀ The more we compassionately recognize how past shows up in our present, the less likely we are to overreact again❣️

9 years ago, I laid on my bed in a full blown panic attack. I picked up my phone to call 911. I spent the next couple of years on medication, continued to get my PhD, + wandered through life dissociated. Just as I always had done since childhood. Looking back, I see this was my mind, body, + soul sending me a clear message: enough. We can only live as the false (conditioned ) self for so long before our bodies start to speak. Sometimes is pain. Sometimes it panic. Sometimes it’s ‘mystery’ illness that are very, very real. Our authentic self if always waiting to be expressed. Our first spiritual trauma is living in an environment where we are not seen or heard. Where as children we learn that we must deny parts of ourselves to receive love. We unconsciously create roles for ourselves. This is why there is so much crippling ‘social anxiety disorder.’ It’s not a disorder, it’s a clear message that parts of our true self have been denied. And we carry that shame. As we become our authentic self, there are growing pains. Relationships shift. Perspectives change. Deep healing occurs. Parts of our past self die to create the space for who we truly are. Which part of becoming your authentic self has been so fulfilling to you? #selfhealers

❥ Following up on my post 2 days ago.. ⠀⠀ I don't know about you, but I've heard this advice several times: "If you want to change your life, you need to change your thinking." ⠀⠀ And it makes perfect sense, right? Trapped as a victim to my mind, I could see how certain negative thoughts were holding me back from moving forward. So I tried my very best to "just think more positive thoughts".. which made it even worse. ⠀⠀ Here is the problem with this "approach": Naturally, we cannot control our thoughts. None of us can. So how exactly could you change something that you have no control over? ⠀⠀ Usually, the more we want to get rid of certain thoughts and replace them with others, the more those unwanted thoughts persist. On top of that, when you label certain thoughts as “wrong,” you also add the burden of judging yourself for having them. A classic example is this: Try not to think of a pink elephant. As you read these words (or even saw my illustration before ), you probably find it extremely hard not to picture the elephant in your mind, despite the instructions. ⠀⠀ Once you understand that your mind operates this way, there’s not much sense in trying to control your thinking. Even if such effort appears to work short-term, multiple studies show that the suppressed thoughts usually return even stronger later on. ⠀⠀ So what can we do? Instead of changing your thoughts, learn to change your relationship to them! It's one of the lessons I teach in the Total Transformation© Program (link in bio ). ⠀⠀ Here’s a hint: It includes Conscious awareness + Non-identification. ⠀⠀ Instead of “changing your life by changing your thoughts,” simply notice them first. In my experience, becoming fully aware of something that doesn’t serve me leaves me no other option but to change it later on. The difference is that this time, the change will be organic rather than forced. Remember that controlling your thinking is usually futile. Don’t judge your mind for judging. Instead, you can find gratitude for becoming more conscious of these thoughts rather than letting them pass unnoticed. ⠀⠀ I would love to know: Have you tried to "change your thoughts"? After 7 years of being a personal trainer.. I had officially launched my online coaching business 1 year ago today! Over the last 7 years I’ve studied a lot into training and nutrition but for the most part as you might know, I’ve focused solely on the mental side of things and the thought processes and mindset we use to ultimately get what we want. I’ve attended numerous personal development seminars from world class speakers and celebrities that talk about overcoming certain hurdles and reaching success, whatever that may be to us. So grateful to have coached so many people over the last 7 years and specifically over the last year online in different countries as well. I never would’ve thought that would’ve been possible. WHAT A DIFFERENCE A YEAR CAN MAKE! ⁣This day last year I was in the ER - to make sure my organs weren’t shutting down from lyme. Soon after my doctor told me he didn’t know why I wasn’t getting better & couldn’t help me anymore. I saw new doctors that said the same. Each time was like a dagger to my heart. Damn right I am. And so are you!⁣ ⁣ the first step to becoming a better version of yourself is telling yourself you’re already that ‘strong’, already that ‘motivated’, already that ‘energized’. Positive affirmations aren’t all just fun and games- the more times you tell your brain something the more likely it is to believe it to be true. ⁣ ⁣ The future version of yourself you desire- what would she/he dress like? How would they talk? What kind of thoughts would they have? What would their morning habits and routines be? ⁣ ⁣ Think about that and then start doing all those things. ⁣ ⁣ We all have the power within us to be whoever and whatever we want- the mind is more powerful than we realize 🧠 ⁣ ⁣ Have a magical weekend everyone 💫

Such a simple question - the basis of my journey to getting in touch with my inner world/emotions ✨ One of the things I USED to do was to ‘float’ through my life and never really ‘check in’ with myself, ask myself / ACKNOWLEDGE what I was feeling and try to work through it. Instead, when things got overwhelming, I would have a mini meltdown, ignore or mask the feeling, until eventually it went away. What i’m working on now, is taking some time each day to acknowledge my feels. The best way to start, is to literally ask yourself how you’re feeling (as if you’re asking a friend ). 

From there, you can explore your feelings at a deeper level. EG - If you’re feeling stressed, you can assess the internal and/or external factors that are contributing to your stress. To work through the emotions you can take a look at what you might be dealing with subconsciously and the limiting beliefs you have surrounding the feeling. 💓 Finally, figure out one thing you can do NOW, to lessen that feeling. One of the most powerful things we can do is to acknowledge our feelings. When we acknowledge them, they have less power. 🤍☀️💚 It’s not easy, and is a bit weird to begin with. But the most important thing is to be open, honest and vulnerable with yourself (something I used to HATE doing ). This simple question has been my saviour lately!🥰🥰

A gut-healthy summer salad for lunch today 🌿🦐 Zucchini and wild-caught prawns sautéed in @lees .provisions ghee + fresh garlic on a bed of leafy greens. Topped with fresh garden herbs, baby tomatoes, and a scoop of wildbrine kraut. I use a couple of strategies to make my meals gentler on the gut, easier to digest, and less likely to cause bloat: • mix cooked + raw veggies. Cooking breaks down hard-to-digest fibres, while raw greens add natural enzymes. • add fermented veggies! They’re filled with probiotics to replenish healthy gut bacteria. • incorporate prebiotics like onions and garlic. These feed our good gut bugs! • consider food combining. While it’s not for everyone, food combining can really help an already comprised digestive system. Proteins or starches digest best with non-starchy veg, but not together. • last of all, eat mindfully, in a calm environment, and CHEW YOUR FOOD! It’s a simple, underrated trick that makes the biggest difference. 🙏🏽
