Boat Pose for Day 9 of @omstarsofficial #journeytohandstandchallenge Keeping the front of my body engaged and in line is one of my biggest struggles when performing handstand so this class was much needed for me. I do alright when I’m on the floor, but when I go upside down I lose the engagement of my front body. It’s one of those things that I know and honestly work really hard to fix but haven’t been able to get there quite yet. Hopefully one day it’ll just click and my body will figure out what my mind already knows. 6 Days Apart! @handstandmvmt saw my last post and gave me a few exercises to try and my goodness THEY WORKED!! My handstand felt stronger and my alignment was so much better 😍 (swipe right for one of the exercises I was shown, vid is sped up ). . . . Turns out glutes are a big part of handstands. I didn’t even consider them! 😂 I have been doing glute bridges wrong for ages, the video sent from handstandmvmt told me how to do them properly. TGIF 💜 (I’m so not editing this mistake out because clearly, I need it to be Friday! It’s Friday in my mind y’all 😍 ) It’s gloomy here today so instead of soaking up the sunshine, I’m focusing on my alignment for freestanding inversions. My back naturally likes to arch so getting into a straight line handstand is a challenge. One I’m up for 💪🏼 In the second clip of this post, you can see I originally undershoot the entry to handstand and then overshoot it. It’s a fine balance of nailing that proper line with the shoulders directly over the hands in order to enter right into a freestanding inversion. 📷 @susanbishopyoga Woohoo! 🎉 I’ve found vertical in my #HandstandPose ↔️ #AdhoMukhaVrksasana ! But it didn’t happen overnight. More like over 704 nights (2 years!! ) 💕 !! . . First remember everyones vertical will look different because we are all built differently (how boring if we all looked the same ) and we all have different challenges (strength, flexibility, control ). When I held that handstand back in the summer of 2016 I was thrilled. Even after I saw the picture and realized how poor my alignment was 🍌 . There’s nothing wrong with my 2016 handstand EXCEPT it was haaard to hold. When your alignment is off it takes more strength (much more ) to hold. So how did I find vertical? By starting with a strong foundation (hands 🕷!! ) and building it up from there based on my own specific challenges. . . ⬅️SWIPE to see the progress throughout the years as I built straight arm strength, increased flexibility in shoulders and thoracic spine, pulled in my ribs and core, engaged from glutes all the way up thru my toes (and shifted my gaze down between my hands ). . ⬅️⬅️SWIPE again to see my fav alignment drill - chest to wall holds! With hands about a foot from the wall tuck your toes and pull belly and ribs in to feel your straight up alignment. You may be so balanced your toes come off the wall!! Overhead mobility/shoulder flexion, as promised from my last post! So you've done the wall test & figured out your shoulder flexion is sub par? The reason for this is often linked to tight lats, here's some exercises to help you out: 1. Butchers Block- I'd recommend building up to hold this for around 1-2 minutes for the most benefits. Because of the tricep involvement in this stretch it also has great crossover to front rack position (if you struggle to get your elbows up during squats have a got at this! ) Can be done anywhere with a box/ledge, from a standing or kneeling position. 2. Lat Stretch- This really is up to you to find your tight spots on the day, it should be from around your armpit down as far as the base of your spine/hip area. As long as you have a basic position down you'll be able to move around and hold for longer on the right areas. Any sturdy upright object works to hold onto. Hold for around 2 minutes total on each side. 3. Cross Bench Pullover - I'd recommend this exercise to those with some experience in mobility work. I've shown a couple of variations here (& there's a few more too ) these are the ones I see the of greatest benefit for overhead mobility. These are great for building strength in this new found range & really solidifying it. I'd recommend going for more strength based sets for these, 5x5 works well with a pause in the end range. Don't forget to retest the wall drill after working on your overhead mobility to see how your improving! . 1:1 outdoor PT sessions now available! . . Handstand alignment!🤸 Alignment in handstand is very important to some, less important to others. If your goal is to just do a handstand, then a perfectly straight line probably isn't a focus. However if you're wanting to progress further than a standard 2-arm, for example into shapes & 1-arm, I'd recommend working on getting a good degree of shoulder flexion alongside your handstand practice. (I'd actually recommend most people without 180° shoulder flexion, handstand goals or not, to work on it but that's for another day! ) The banana handstand is the most common issue when it comes to alignment, it's root cause being a lack of shoulder flexion. The second slide is a video of how to test your shoulder flexion & a quick explanation of what happens. The diagrams show a simplified version of how the degree of shoulder flexion affects the alignment of the handstand. The key to being able to jump into and hold a handstand is having proper alignment! Many people do not get their shoulders over their wrists and their hips over their shoulders! If fear is the issue, you can always have a wall behind you 🙏🏻 read below for more details 👇👇👇Thanks for sharing @adellbridges #inflexibleyogis ・・・ Scientific Fact: There are over 7 billion ways to learn a handstand. Yup! Because learning to handstand is going to be different for every single person, depending on your body, your background, and your thoughts and attitudes towards handstanding . . So I never want to suggest that there’s a “wrong” way to do a handstand. However, there are three tips I’d like to share that may be helpful, based on what I’ve seen from my students and what I’ve learned in my own handstanding journey: . 1️⃣! Use your legs to help you get up there! By engaging! Whether you’re kicking up to a wall or in the middle of the room, jump off the bottom leg but also LIFT that top leg up to the sky! It will help you stay controlled and help you to get: . 2️⃣! Hips over wrists: I know you wanna get your feet up there but your feet aren’t where your centre of gravity is. Your hips are! Once your hips are over your foundation (your hands ), you’ll get a feel for having your body’s weight entirely on your hands, and you’ll start to learn and build strength in this position . 3️⃣! Balance with your hands. When you stand on your feet, you don’t sway your hips or head around to keep balanced! No, your feet and your toes are doing the work. Same story with your hands in handstand. Your fingers should be digging into the mat, working hard to keep you balanced! If your fingers aren’t working, then you need to shift more weight towards them and away from the base of the hand . . BONUS TIP: look in between your hands. This drishti won’t work for everyone but in my experience it’s what works for most . . So that’s four tips of about 7,228,829,629 total handstanding tips that I’m sure are out there. This may work for you, it may not. You’re not wrong though; you’re learning! I’m learning! We are all learning! It’s fun!!

Tuck hold in the middle of the room💣 . Still takes a lot of willpower to jump into this one, although I know I can exit safely for some time now😆 I was sharing some holds on my IG stories with the sofa behind me and today I decided to try to ditch it🥳 . Few tips if this one is your goal too: 1. You are strong! The fact you can’t jump into a tuck is probably because you brain is stopping you😅 Start doing the negative - jump up with one leg to a straight handstand - wall behind you, hands around 20 cm (one foot ) away from it, so you have some space for your head to look down💁‍♀️ Once both legs are up at the wall, walk the toes down so you end up in a tuck shape, then look down and try to balance - only one foot (toes ) at the wall at a time - this shape needs to be engraved in your brain😋 From there, try to lower your legs slowly down, using as much control as possible🙌 2. Align your shoulders over finger tips before attempting to jump up - this way your arms are already there, only the hips needs to come up - think “hips high”! 3. “It’s easy!!!” is your mantra from now on😊 (I was repeating it in my head before this photo too😂 ) 4. Repeat every day and many times and have in mind that this can be a loooong process🤷‍♀️ I could jump and hold my tuck with a wall already year ago, and only now I am transferring to hold it in the middle of the room, while I started with learning to handstand 4 years ago😱 .
