So today I went to the Vitamin Shoppe. I was talking to the manager there. And I had my mask on and my sunglasses. 😷😎 (feeling all claustrophobic and shiiiiii.... but I digress ) 🙄 We talked about products like superfoods, etc. Eventually I took off my sunglasses, he looks at me and this happened: Steve: “Wait, were you a fitness model some years ago?” Me: 😮 Yes, I’ve been published and featured in magazines and online. Oh wow, so cool! 💪🏻 Steve: I thought so! You looked familiar to me when you came in last time even. Now that you took off your sunglasses, I see your eyes and I know it’s you. You have large distinct eyes. Very different. Me: 😢 Oh wow, I’m so flattered. Can’t believe you remembered me. You SO made my day! Thank you!! So much of how you look is based exclusively on genetics...that sounds kind of silly to say, but I feel like people forget that we’re literally born with certain traits that we can’t change. When people ask what I do to achieve my physique I’m like...”Well, I was born. Then I went through puberty, and now I look like this.” I’ve literally always had bigger thighs and a smaller waist, but that’s pretty much exclusively because my mom is the same way and I’m sure her mom and her mom’s mom were the same way. It’s so fucked up that people look at “fitspo” or “thinspo” and want to attain a body that they genetically can never achieve. I could never look like someone like Kendall Jenner, no matter how little I eat or how much cardio I do. I naturally carry more fat in my thighs and butt and even if I was like 100 pounds I’d still have bigger thighs...it’s just my friggin genetics! And I know it sounds out of touch for someone who has a body type that is considered “desirable” to say these kinds of things, but think about 20-30 years ago. The ideal body type was stick thin and no curves. So you better believe when I was growing up I wanted that stick thin, Kendall Jenner body type. The point is, there are a lot of things you can’t necessarily change about yourself and THAT IS OK! You have to accept the things you can’t change and try to become your own goals. If you feel like you have a lot more fat on your body than you’d like, start an exercise regime and starting eating in a healthier way and try to improve what you already have. 🚿 I TOOK COLD SHOWERS FOR A MONTH 🚿 . Yep, it’s true! Inspired by a @mattdavella video last year, I decided to only take cold showers for a whole 30 days. It was March, it was COLD and I was getting three showers a day (due to ma workout schedule ). . Whilst they have loads of health benefits, the reason I actually did this was for my mindset. The theory behind cold showers is that it’s supposed to help you get over ‘the flinch’. The most important part of the shower is the few seconds before, where you’re anticipating and getting scared of the discomfort you’re about to experience. The actual cold shower isn’t too bad (I swear! ), you adjust in a few seconds and then it’s over before you know it. . ‘The flinch’ isn’t just to do with the shower btw, it’s that anxious feeling you get when you think about doing something that’s a little challenging. Whether it’s that intense workout, that huge essay or that home renovation you keep putting off. It triggers this fight or flight response in us. Either we get scared of the inevitable discomfort, or we stand up to it and get our sh*t done. Instead of procrastinating and being scared of the flinch, we need to face it head on and get stuck in!! This was what I wanted to tackle with my cold showers - I needed to learn to take on my flinch🧼 . The results? I still procrastinate, we all do 🤣 But after committing to a month of discomfort, several times a day, I’m deffo more equipped to overcome my flinch. I just think back to the time I got a load of cold showers and it motivates me! . So if you’re looking for motivation this hump day - JUST GET UP AND DO IT!!!💪💪💪💪💪 and if you do the cold shower thing, let me know! Pretty proud of myself for pushing hard tonight🔥 I’ve still been a little anxious back at the gym after the incident, but tonight I decided to put that anxious energy to good use - I PRd my deadlifts for the first time post-quarantine!! 135x3 and another 135x2 without lifting straps, which is huge for me.
