“People can cry much easier than they can change.” ― James Baldwin Fellow #bookreviewersofinstagram , what was the last over-hyped book that left you feeling unsatisfied? I finished #StampedFromTheBeginning by #IbramXKendi last week for my #AfricanAmericanLiterature course and felt as if Auntie ‘Retha had taken up residence in my body. While it is clear that Kendi put a lot of work into this book, it was very much a “beautiful gowns” type of text for me…or rather “beautiful sources.” From the offset, it is jarringly clear that this book was written pre-2016 Election when many folks believed they were living in a “post-racial” world and were congratulating themselves for having elected a Black man for president. This sentiment of being “post-racism” props up the book’s thesis that “everyone’s a little bit racist, so no one should really be allowed to call another person out. We’re all equal in ALL ways.” #Paraphrase And, this is where Kendi lost me. To be fair, Kendi writes of #antiracism , “Anyone can believe both racist and antiracist ideas…[and] to think as an antiracist: [is] to think there is nothing wrong with Black people, to think that racial groups are equal.” The latter part of this is a beautiful sentiment, but that first part brings us into a sticky territory that teeters very close to absolving racist from the harm they’ve inflicted. Racism requires power to go along with a person’s prejudicial attitude. Thus, while non-Black people and even Black people hold prejudices/bias and anti-Black sentiments, they do not hold the power that has been built into all American systems to bar other BIPOC people from being active participants. Ditto for this idea that “reverse” racism exists. White people’s racism gives you 500+ years of oppression. It gives you Tulsa and Rosewood. It gives you the Klan/a corrupt police force, the “school-to-prison” pipeline…a “not guilty” verdict in the #BreonnaTaylor case…etc. (Continued below )

I’m just over here taking all the classes and tutorials in illustration, watercolor and gouache, playing with Procreate, and reading cozy mysteries. I’m loving @catcoq on Skillshare (awesome @procreate typography/lettering tutorial ) and as always, @letsgomakeart is my favorite subscription box ever. And I recently discovered @ellie_alexander for cozy mysteries. I love her books! They remind me of Murder She Wrote, a show I absolutely adored as a child. “Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare.”― Audre Lorde Fellow #readersofbookstagram , have you taken a moment to do self-care this weekend? To say that September hasn’t held it’s own in 2020 would be a whole bald-faced lie. We’ve lost everyone from Chadwick Boseman to Ruth Bader Ginsburg to the fictitious sense of “balance” and “justice” we all thought the Supreme Court would have in this land. As a Black woman, the Breonna Taylor verdict was the straw that broke the camel’s back, so this weekend went to having a #selfcaremoment . Along with spending time with family, attending #bookclub , and laughing at random stuff on the Internet, I’ve been diving into the #EmberQuarter by #SabaaTahir . Thanks to @PenguinTeen and the #EmberReadAlong , I’ve had the chance to read all three books in #AnEmberInTheAshesSeries in preparation for the release of the final book, #ASkyBeyondTheStorm . #PenguinTeenPartner Tahir’s series has been the perfect form of #escapism thanks to this pandemic and the tomfoolery of 2020. Do you all have any books or genres in particular that are getting you through this crazy year?

Did you know I started a book club with some amazing friends this year and it is hands down the crowning achievement of my year/life? 😂Have I told you that already? 🙈 I just need to keep telling everyone because it makes me so happy. We have read two books so far and this is up next for number three. 🧡 I am excited to dive into this one because I have never read anything by Jodi Picoult but have heard so many great things. 💫 Have you read this book? Are you a Jodi Picoult fan? Tell me all about it please!

Okay... I know it's not #JaneAwesomeWednesday and I know I'm a little behind the times... but I just watched the new 2020 movie of Emma. I had some thoughts - many, but we'll be concise. . 🌷Rumors of 'aesthetically pleasing' were true - loved the pastel colors along with crisp white. 🌷Never wanted to see either Mr. Knightley's butt or Emma's. Definitely not both. 🌷Why was Emma bleeding out during the proposal??? - blood getting all in her teeth and everything... It's like I'm suddenly watching a horror film! 🌷And at the risk of sounding quite snobby, that's about it. . To summarize, I thought of this movie what Mr. Knightley thinks of Harriet Smith: "Pretty, but that is all." 😬 . Whew! I just had to share. . 📖 What were your thoughts? . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #booksofinstagram #booksofig #igbooks #booksbooksbooks #bookworm #bibliophile #bookcollector #bookaholic #bookarrangement #classic #classicliterature #classiclitnetwork #mybookfeatures #frommybookshelf #vintage #booksandflowers #victorian #driedflowers #emma #emmamovie #janeaustenfan #janeausten #janeaustenmovies #misswoodhouse #mrknightley #pastel #emma2020

‘There was no hidden sadness in the faint streaks of gold that gleamed in the sunlit beech woods, for the first timid finger of autumn had always been the herald of the holiday.’ — R. C. Sherriff . . . What an extraordinary novel this is; a novel in which very little happens, which in consequence tells us a very great deal. . Written with the narrative precision and attention to tiny domestic and social details that I normally associate with very good short stories, the immense humanity of the Stevens family, with all their traits and foibles, strengths and flaws laid out unsparingly and yet with such tender affection before the reader, is dazzling in its empathetic portrayal. . Published in 1931, when ordinary people were feeling the pinch of ongoing economic turmoil and yet, at the same time, aspiring to greater sophistication in their leisure pursuits, the book carries a strong sense of how times were changing for those like the Stevens and their seaside landlady. The characters’ quiet stoicism belies the depth and keenness of their feelings in the face of life’s uncertainties, and each is heroic in his or her own small, workaday way. For us (although not, of course, for Sherriff in even his worst nightmares ) the novel stands equipoised between the two World Wars, and comes both elevated and encumbered by our nostalgia for that lost age. This is a joyous, thoughtful, gentle book, and it is with a pang of deepest sadness that we read ‘warm nights had gone for good now, and the autumn had arrived.’ . . . (Do please visit @jatterbywarren24 and @mirandasbookcase for more discussion of this literary delight. ) . . . . . #TheFortnightInSeptember #RCSherriff #PersephoneBooks #twentiethcenturyfiction #thecharmofbooks #thecosybookshelf #_momentsofmine #capturingautumn #readingtheseasons #ofsimplethings #paperintheframe #stillswithstories #daysofsimpleandslow #tinytinymoments #literarylustre #stories_squared #aquietstyle_books #frommybookshelf #mybookfilledlife #bookstagram

Rindu Kalau nak pilih novel. Cadangan sangat dialu-alukan. 💝 Nota: Ada juga yang cadangkan novel-novel Hlovate. Buat masa sekarang, tak nak. Akan datang, mungkin nak. 😊 #justmythoughts #randomthoughts #frommybookshelf

Not everything I write is horror. This dark family saga is a novel I wrote in memory of my mum. It deals with grief and mental health issues but is also a tale of new beginnings. Free on #kindleunlimited or £2.99. It's been very well reviewed and for the first year after publishing I donated all proceeds to the brain tumor trust, raising £147. . 🖊 ‘I’m lying on the floor of my new house in Cornwall surrounded by boxes... with my knees bent and .... a book under my head. The book is a big blue hardback that contains all four of Daphne du Maurier’s Cornish novels. Rebecca is my favourite.... . ~ Dear Reader:The Comfort and Joy of Books by Cathy Rentzenbrink published Sept 2020~ . 🖊 As soon as I read the opening words of @catrentzenbrink ’s latest book, #DearReader ,I knew I was in good hands. As many of you know, Cornwall is a special place for my family and I just happen to be re- reading #Rebecca as part of a read along group, ahead of the new Netflix film airing next month. . 🖊 I have also previously read #cathyrentzenbrink ’s deeply moving memoir, #TheLastActOfLove , about the loss of her brother, Matty, and so her words in ‘Dear Reader’ are particularly poignant when she says ‘when the bite of real life is too brutal, I retreat into made-up worlds and tread well-worn paths. I don’t crave the new when I feel like this, but look for solace in the familiar..... Reading built me and has always had the power to put me back together again.’ . 🖊 It’s not just the solace that she takes from books that she writes about though. She also shares the joy of reading that she has had since a young child, the books that she has loved, and her experiences as a bookseller in Waterstones, her work for the charity Quick Reads, and becoming a published author. . 🖊 I am only part way through the book, but can see me buying several copies of this lovely reading memoir, wrapped up in it’s stunning cover by @lucy_scholes_design , as presents for people this Christmas! . 🖊 Huge thanks to @bookbreakuk and @picadorbooks for another great #gift of a book.

I finally got round to reading “The Fortnight In September”, which I mentioned in a previous post a few weeks ago. I think a few others were considering reading this, so I’d love to hear your thoughts on the book if you have time to share. I really enjoyed this...although, at first, I felt a thread of melancholy running through it. Perhaps it reminded me of my parents and their siblings, from old black & white family snapshots of holidays years ago - which I found poignant. However, I loved the detail of the writing. The build-up and preparation for the holiday showed just how important an event it was for the family...nothing could be taken for granted. I was interested in the way each member of the family was portrayed, clearly reflecting the attitudes of society at that time. (I’d enjoy discussing this! ) Just like the gradual change in the seasons we’re experiencing now, the reader is left with a change in the air at the end of the book...nothing is permanent however much we’d like those things we cherish to remain the same. I think we’ve all been reminded of this over the past months in our own lives. #thefortnightinseptember #rcsherriff #bookstagram #booklover #bookcollector #bibliophile #igreads #booksofig #readersofig #seasonalreading #frommybookshelf #readingtheseasons

• "Tea is a work of art and needs a master hand to bring out its noblest qualities. We have good and bad tea, as we have good and bad paintings — generally the latter. There is no single recipe for making the perfect tea, as there are no rules for producing a Titian or a Sesson. Each preparation of the leaves has its individuality, its special affinity with water and heat, its hereditary memories to recall, its own method of telling a story." — Kakuzo Okakura .. The sole purpose of this post is to celebrate #NationalChaiDay . While the International Tea Day is a separate calendar date observed by UN, and is celebrated in May, I came to know only today that September 21st is designated as 𝙉𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝘾𝙝𝙖𝙞 𝘿𝙖𝙮 in India. A long time ago, I read "The Book of Tea", by Kakuzo Okakura. It's a collection of essays by the author, divided into seven chapters — each bringing out a different aspect of Tea culture in Asia, followed by the art that underlies the concept, and its appreciation. In this classic, Okakura brings to documentation, tea tradition and how it symbolized Asian culture. The book not only discusses the journey of tea from Chinese Taoism towards Zen discipline - Japanese Tea ceremony, but also discusses the impact of these traditions at length on Asian cultural development. .. #thebookoftea #teapost #teaappreciation #teaculture #asianculture #asiantea #frommybookshelf #shotononeplus #shotononeplus7t #oneplusphotography #teaphotography

Just finished Please Look After Mom tonight. It was a poignant read that explores the way we grieve a loss. It also, I think, subtly explores the changing shape of women’s roles in South Korea. “I have been feeling very clearheaded lately and what I want to write about today is the sea. It contains so many colors. Silver at dawn, green at noon, dark blue in the evening. Sometimes it looks almost red. Or it will turn the color of old coins. Right now the shadows of clouds are dragging across it, and patches of sunlight are touching down everywhere. White strings of gulls drag over it like beads.⁣ ⁣ It is my favorite thing, I think, that I have ever seen. Sometimes I catch myself staring at it and forget my duties. It seems big enough to contain everything anyone could ever feel.”⁣ •••⁣ I *finally* read All The Light We Cannot See, after it has lived so patiently on my TBR for years. The book essentially tells the parallel stories and ultimate crossing of paths between Marie-Laure and Werner Pfenning during World War II. It did not disappoint. It is breathtaking and heartbreaking. It is so powerful and heavy but reads so quickly. I found Anthony Doerr’s writing incredible. The way he was able to hit you so hard in small in-between sentences, you’d almost miss them. But there they were. Lighting up the darkness for you, hitting you right in your heart.⁣ ⁣ I chose a longer quote from the book to post above, but I thought I would share some of those in-between sentences with you too:⁣ ⁣ ☆ “Open your eyes and see what you can with them before they close forever.”⁣ ⁣ ☆ “But it is not bravery; I have no choice. I wake up and live my life. Don't you do the same?”⁣ ⁣ ☆ “Don’t you want to be alive before you die?”⁣ ⁣ ☆ “Time is a slippery thing: lose hold of it once, and its string might sail out of your hands forever.”⁣ ⁣ ☆ “All your life you wait, and then it finally comes, and are you ready?”⁣ ⁣ •••⁣ ⁣ If you haven’t already, read this book.

The woodcutter is very poor and a war rages around them, making it difficult for them to put food on the table. Yet every night, his wife prays for a child.⁣ ⁣ A Jewish father rides on a train holding twin babies. His wife no longer has enough milk to feed both children. In hopes of saving them both, he wraps his daughter in a shawl and throws her into the forest.⁣ ⁣ While foraging for food, the wife finds a bundle, a baby girl wrapped in a shawl. Although she knows harboring this baby could lead to her death, she takes the child home.⁣ ⁣ Set against the horrors of the Holocaust and told with a fairytale-like lyricism, The Most Precious of Cargoes is a fable about family and redemption which reminds us that humanity can be found in the most inhumane of places.⁣ ⁣ #TheMostPreciousofCargoes #JeanClaudeGrumberg #fable #Holocaust #bookclub #mustread #WWII #booktime #amreading #readersofinstagram #bookster #bookcommunity #calmversation #igreads #bookblogger #topbookstagram #bookobsessed #instabooks #winterreads #bookaesthetic #frommybookshelf #bookishallure #readingaddict #ilovetoread #booktour #bookreview #booklove #french #translatedbooks

SYNOPSIS | Paris between the wars teems with artists, writers, and musicians, a glittering crucible of genius. But amidst the dazzling creativity of the city’s most famous citizens, four regular people are each searching for something they’ve lost. This book is set in one of my favorite eras: Paris in the 1920’s. And while some of my favorite artists are mentioned in these pages, it’s the main characters who are “ordinary” that caught my attention. Somehow their paths intertwine and their lives are changed by each other. This was a beautiful book that preaches kindness above all else. I have never read another book by Alex George, but he writes so beautifully that I’m thinking I need to check out his other work. One thing I loved is how the end doesn’t tie everything up, but there is so much hope for each character. I can absolutely see this book being the next book club choice. If you enjoy historical fiction with features from literary and artistic figures, this book is sure to excite. And while I was happy to dive into a setting that I love so much, I found I learned a lot too. The book felt perfect the entire time I read it, and I’m so pleased that I bought my own copy (it looks so pretty on my shelf ).

. 🌊 I am down in Cornwall for a couple of weeks so thought it fitting to offer a coastal version of @amyandbooks#sixbookcolourchallenge . I’m calling it the #sixbookcoastalchallenge and the books I have selected from my shelves are: . 🌊 #TheSingOfTheShore by #LucyWood : ‘At the very edge of England, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the land and visitors flock in the summer like seagulls, there is a Cornwall that is not shown on postcards’ ...but this book of short stories does! I shared this one on the feed in June 2018 during one of our trips to Cornwall. . 🌊 #TheBookOfPebbles by #ChristopherStocks & #AngieLewin : this beautifully illustrated guide to pebbles was shared on the feed in March 2019. . 🌊 #TheSaltPath by #RaynorWinn : this moving memoir was bought in @stivesbookseller , Cornwall, in March 2018. We have walked part of the Cornish path mentioned in the book and enjoyed seeing some photos of the Devon part of the path over on @mrslorrainesmith ’s feed yesterday! . 🌊 #GiftFromTheSea by #AnneMorrowLindbergh : bought in @huntingravensbooks in Frome in July 2017, this book of meditations on life uses a gift from the sea to symbolise each pearl of wisdom and was first published in 1955.The author was famous not only for her writing, but as the wife of aviator , Charles Lindbergh, and, sadly, for the kidnap, and death, of their first baby. . 🌊TheGiantsNecklace by Michael Morpurgo: a moving ghost story set in a Cornish tin mine near Zennor. . 🌊 #CornishShortStories ;an anthology of #shortstories by #CornishWriters . @amyandbooks , who is currently down in Cornwall, has also just posted a pic of this book. . 🌊 Do you fancy sharing your books that are linked to the coast?

🕶 ‘IN THIS WORLD, PERFECTION IS EVERYTHING ‘ . 🕶 If you are looking for a great beach, or staycation read this summer then Iook no further! Q , or #MasterClass as it is known in the US, by #ChristinaDalcher is a great read that will keep you well and truly pinned to your sun lounger! . 🕶 Dalcher’s latest dystopian novel is set in the not-too-distant future America where everyone undergoes regular intelligence testing for their quotient, Q, which determines everything from which supermarket queue you can use to which school you can attend. Dalcher tells her story through the eyes of Elena Fairchild, a teacher at one of the state’s top tier schools where only children with a Q score of 9+ are taught by the most academically gifted teachers. . 🕶 Elena has 2 daughters and whilst one is academically gifted, and attends a top tier school, the other struggles, and when she fails the latest test she is sent away to one of the government’s bottom tier schools. Elena is horrified and deliberately fails her own monthly test so that she is sent to teach at her youngest daughter’s school, but what she discovers there is absolutely terrifying .... . 🕶 Just as Margaret Atwood has said that all events in The Handmaid’s Tale were inspired by history, so Christina Dalcher has acknowledged that the historical events mentioned in her novel are very real and based on the American eugenics movement, details of which are widely available on the Internet. . 🕶 Thank you @hqstories for the #gift of this #cautionarytale .

My copy of Meg & Jo arrived and I couldn’t be more excited! Perfect timing as I’m in the midst of my Little Women (re )read (I’m convinced I read it ages ago but it could be because of how many times I’ve watched the movie... ). I’m looking forward to this modern retelling and can’t wait to discuss it in our book club next month! Have you read this one yet?

Day 16: 🎶”Eating candy canes and trimming trees”(Book and Favourite Christmas Sweets ). 🎶 • It’s the last full week before Christmas, there’s Christmas parties to attend, presents to wrap, festive meals to plan and prep, and most importantly, taking time to enjoy this wonderful time of year - something I think we easily forget. I’ve been on a reading kick the last week or so, maybe because the end of the year is approaching and I’m desperate to squeeze in a few more books. I’ll be starting this fun Christmas mystery today - it’s listed as the 6th in the series, but I understand these can be read as standalones. Any of you a fan of this mystery series by Rhys Bowen? Of course, I’ll have one or two of these Limited Edition Lindt Peppermint White Chocolate Truffles as a reading treat. I’m not usually a white chocolate fan, but these are so peppermint-y and delicious, I do indulge and buy them each year. • Last night, I finished, probably my favourite non-fiction of 2019, ‘The Five’ by Hallie Rubenhold. @thelondonlibrary recently launched a new podcast, and their first guest was Rubenhold. Her interview was fascinating, and made me bump up her book about the untold lives of the women killed by Jack the Ripper. Her research and perspective was so unique and well written - I gobbled up the book in less than a day. If you’re looking for a new podcast, I highly recommend this one. Each interview is fresh and fun and I love how each guest discusses the books that shaped their lives. I have added quite a few of their recommendations to my list after listening.
