Had a moment to reflect during mat time today - The Malasana or Garland pose (second pic ) . When I was in boarding school in India, we had about 20 Indian style toilets and 2 western. Because of the high demand to use the western toilet, our matron kept it locked most of the time 🙄 I hated using the Indian style toilet and never understood why they were made that way...until I started practicing Yoga. Now, when you sit in the Malasana pose (that's how we sit on an Indian style toilet ) you can assess your body's limitations and strengths. It challenges the mechanics of the entire body and the main benefit of this pose is, you guessed it - improves the function of the colon, thus helping with elimination! . It's the first day of #alobouttheroots 🌱 - Body Positivity. Like many women, my body has always been my enemy. I've struggled with anorexia in my teens and BED in my twens. I would eat nothing until i fainted, and steal myself to my room feasting away on chips until i was sick. I knew no normal. Ever since my body got more womenly, i fought it. It wasnt even about my self esteem, it was also about fighting my emotions. Dont laugh, but i grew up thinking only women had feelings and therefore we were the inferior gender, and i was gonna starve that inferiority away and be only strong and logical (i grew up largely without my father, who would have guessed )... Sickly thin and androgynous was my ideal. Instead i got huge boobs that then were subject to unwanted attention, they hindered me in sports, teenage years also destroyed many of my (mostly male ) friendships, furthering my bad relationship with my body. I am glad to see how many people speak openly and educate about ED's and mental health online now. It was completely different when I grew up. Now, only weeks away from turning 30, i am finally in recovery. Most days are okay. Some days i eat everything in sight and then feel terrible. Others i might not eat at all. But i am working on a normal relationship with my body, probably for the rest of my life. I also learned to accept and appreciate the fact that I am a woman. This is why I choose goddess pose. Tight Hips? Try this dynamic stretch before your next workout and see how you feel! ----- Stand with your leg up to the side, knee bent, shin placed on an object like a box or the arm of your couch. ----- Pull your chest and pelvis towards your elevated foot, trying to target a stretch in that hip, pause for a solid second or 2, then relax. Be active and think about using your hip to pull you deeper, don't just turn your torso. ----- Repeat 5 times, 2-3 sets, or hold a bit longer to really open up some new range. ----- A lack of hip internal rotation is pretty good sign of "tight" hips, and a hip that can't rotate isn't really a hip at all! It seems forever for me to learn this. It’s a slow process. The “ease” part what is extremely hard for me since I want to get to my fullest expression immediately. That’s a flaw and I’m working on it. Not because it is a flaw but I know that I hurt myself with not giving enough time for my body to adapt, and I’m forever grateful for my wonderful vessel. The human body is a fascination creation, which never ceases to amaze me. There is a lot to be thankful for. ⠀ ⠀ In these turbulent times it’s extremely important to truly take care of yourself- both mentally and physically. You should be your number 1 priority since if you’re unwell you can never truly help others. Yoga really starts off the mat. ⠀ ⠀ Your body knows exactly what it needs. Listen to it when it warns you. Listen to your instincts, trust your gut. Be kind with yourself and with others. Don’t judge anyone. —> These are my mantras these days. FOAM ROLLING MY DOMS AWAY🔥 Do you foam roll? I foam roll pretty much every day, without fail. It was about 2 years ago when I started doing it and I can't imagine not doing it now. When things don't work, change the strategy! Took me for years to realise I was practicing wrongly in any fold forward poses. I was always using my hamstrings to bow forward instead of my hips. There's a limit for our muscles to get stretched, and the movement should be initiated by the joint, which is hips here. But I was just forcing my hamstrings for many years just to fold deeper till I started to have the chronic pain at the attachment of the hamstrings. And I literally suffered from the pain for almost 3 years 😞 How I changed my practice? BEND MY KNEES A LOT till my belly connect to my thighs ☝️ Then slowly start to straighten WITHOUT LOOSING THE BELLY/THIGHS CONTACT. Seated/standing fold forward, doesn't matter. This is how I practice, and now I can fully straighten! I don't say it's the quick solution but definitely the safest!
