The Impala is known for its long, spiral horns, which males use to challenge each other in tests of strength. Older impala males stake out mating territories and herd groups of females that they jealously guard against any rivals. During this exhausting mating period, the male must fight off challengers, herd his females, and mate with them. Unsuccessful bids to take over a male's territory usually end with the loser retreating to join a bachelor herd. A female southern sea otter( Enhydra lutris ) and her pup enjoy a tasty meal in Elkhorn Slough, a 7-mile-long tidal slough and estuary on Monterey Bay. With counts exceeding 100 animals, Elkhorn Slough has the highest concentration of southern sea otters on the California coast. Its protected waters are a safe haven for mothers to raise their young. Otters eat clams, crabs, oysters, abalone, sea urchin and other small marine species including the fat innkeeper worm, as seen in this image. Sea otters must eat as much as 25 percent of their body weight each day to stay healthy and warm. Sea otter moms with young pups must work twice as hard to survive. Sea otters are protected and intentionally approaching them within 50 ft is a federal offense. Also disturbing their natural behavior for the sake of a photograph is unethical and can endanger their young. This image was shot from a kayak with a 500mm lens and subsequently cropped. Just sitting here basking in the early evening sun... Had a quick look at some of the @pilanesberg_national_park groups and couldn't find any images of this chap, which I thought was a bit odd. He's such an incredibly unique and dramatic cat! I would've thought with his almost ghostly presence he'd be the male Lion superstar of the park! Maybe its just me that loves the grizzly and gnarly AF kitties? Seeing this dude gorging himself on an Elephant carcass was all kinds of my vibe. Sitting downwind from a rancid Elephant carcass, to the point where your eyes are burning and you can almost taste it, was not all kinds of my vibe, but worth it. . . . @pilanesberg_ @natureismetal @_natureisfuckinglit @thedarksideofnature @natureisbrutal @natureisavage @lionsofafrica_ @lions @reall_nature @wildestafrica

Duck feets!!! 🦆 “How often do you think about ducks? How do they spend their days? As aquatic birds, it's no surprise that when you do see them it is usually near or in the water. Highly adapted animals, they expend little energy while swimming and have a special gland known as a preen gland on the base of their tails that secretes oil, helping their feathers to stay water-resistant. “ - @bbcearth •⠀ •⠀ ᴊᴏɪɴ ᴏᴜʀ earth focused ᴄᴏᴍᴍᴜɴɪᴛʏ:⠀ 👉 @earthcarexecotravel 🌎⠀ 👉 @earthcarexecotravel 🌎⠀ 👉 @earthcarexecotravel 🌎⠀ •⠀ •⠀ 📸 Credits: @irrational_geographic •⠀ ⠀ Travel. This shot of @getupandghost , straight chilling in the great outdoors, is one of favorites. To me it symbolizes my own relationship with being outside. Nature brings me peace and balance, but it also brings me excitement and wonder. It’s what drives me to explore and camp and live life on the road. It’s what drove me to pick up a camera so I could share that feeling with others. My hope is that this shot gives you just a lick of that feeling and I hope that there are many more shots to come. @michelobultra #puregoldceo #promo

I plant trees so that our children and grandchildren will still have them when they are grown. 🌲 I have always been deeply connected to the natural world. I grew up in the forests of Vermont, and later became a Conservation Biologist to try and protect it. Now my goal is to fight climate change and replant the forests of the world for the sake of all children. And I am teaching my own children to be the best stewards of the world that they can be for when it is their turn to take care of it. That is why #Iamatreeplanter 🌲 🌲 (And I just had a tree planted for writing this post. Many of you know that Chris and I embarked on our dream photo expedition last November… and while pretty much NOTHING has gone to plan, we are still 100% committed to our goal of backpacking, bikepacking, packrafting and canoeing our way through the backcountry of our 62 National Parks. ⁣ We canoed the Rio Grande for 16 spectacular days along the border of Big Bend, explored the epic spring waterfalls of Yosemite Valley, and most recently backpacked the entire 221 miles of the John Muir Trail through Yosemite, Kings Canyon & Sequoia. There have been lots of excursions (and mishaps ) in between, but we’re grateful that with everything going on we’ve been able to do as much as we have.  ⁣ Our mission through @americaswildplaces is to show you that your National Parks are more than just the iconic landmarks you see on google. They are vast expanses of unexplored wilderness… and places of deep healing that must be protected.  ⁣ The reason why I’m sharing this is because @michelobULTRA is searching for a CEO ~ Chief Exploration Officer, and because we’re already so committed to photographing and exploring our National Parks, I think we’d be a perfect fit! ⁣ Being from Belgium also means that I already have a deep appreciation for good beer (and chocolate ) 🤓🍺 🍫 ⁣ So here’s me throwing my name in the hat - along with one of my favorite photographs from our recent trip to Kings Canyon NP! ⁣ ...and no matter what happens, here’s to continuing to share the stories of joy that our connection with nature brings 🌲💕🌻 ⁣ #PureGoldCEO #promo

Toward the end of August, young alligators begin to make high-pitched noises from inside their eggs. This lets the mother know that it is time to remove the material covering her nest. When a baby alligator hatches it measures about 6 to 8 inches and will grow approximately 1 foot per year until maturity. Newly hatched alligators live in small groups, called "pods” but unfortunately Some 80 percent of young alligators fall victim to predators such as birds, raccoons, bobcats, otters, snakes, large bass and larger alligators. Females aggressively defend their young during these first few years. Crocodilians are one of the only orders of reptiles that offer maternal care to their young. ———————————————————— #wildlifelovers #wildlifephotos #wildlifeperfection #wildlifesafari #naturephotography #wildlifeprotection #wildlifeplanet #animalphotography #conservation #conservationphotography #endangeredspecies #wildlifephotography #wildlifeconservation #wildlifephotographer #savewildlife #naturelovers #gator #aligators #nature #florida #travelphotography #natgeo #reptilesofinstagram #wildanimals #naturephotography #reptiles #reptile #wildlifeconservation #naturelovers #wildlifephotography

Feeding time at the elephant orphanage ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This little elephant is an orphan. Along with many other orphaned infant elephants, he has been rescued by the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Nairobi, where I was lucky enough to encounter him. His mother and family were most likely killed by poachers for their ivory, leaving him alone, traumatised and grieving. Baby elephants are fully dependent on their mother's milk for the first two years of life and continue weaning until the age of four, so DSWT have developed a special milk formula to feed the orphans every three hours and their keepers stay with them twenty-four hours a day, even sleeping with the elephants during the night. DSWT takes in orphan elephants from all over Kenya and raises them until they can be released into the herds of Tsavo National Park and reintegrated back into the wild. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ You can find out more about the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust @DSWT ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #worldelephantday2019 #worldelephantday #orphanelephants #babyelephant #elephant #elephants #africanelephant #africanelephants #elephantsafari #wildlife #africanwildlife #wildlifephotography #wildlifeconservation #conserve #conservationphotography #stoppoaching #endangeredspecies #protectwildlife #savewildlife #jointheherd #worthmorealive #savetheelephants #bekindtoelephants #wildlifephotography #wildlifephoto #nature #nairobi #nairobinationalpark #kenya #eastafrica

Hey, uh, buddy, I think you’ve got some sea grass on your face! Harbor seals are so darn cute! Traditionally- some have viewed them as a threat to fish populations (since they primarily eat fish ), but recent studies have discovered that this is likely the opposite! In fact- multiple studies discovered that in areas where the population of seals and sea lions have recovered (after Marine Mammal Protection Act ), their abundance actually seems to have a positive effect on fish populations! The interconnectedness of our planet and oceans is SO interesting... it always amazes me! Also, if you want to read the studies I’m talking about, DM me! : )

“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not.” - Dr. Seuss A few weeks ago my family came to visit Maine. I watched the movie “the Lorax” with my nephew. It was one of the best children’s movies I’ve ever seen. Teaching a valuable lesson to the young minds on conservation and what happens when we exploit our natural resources. I visited Baxter State Park for the first time last week. The fall colors made it look just like Truffula trees in the movie. I spent time educating myself on the history of this incredible place. I’ve traveled all over the country, been to over 35 national parks and visited some of the most wild areas in the US and never seen a place managed quite like Baxter State Park. With many of Maine’s woods being used for logging it’s incredible to see how man and the natural world can coexist. Places like BSP set the standard for the rest of the world. BPS “shall forever be used for public park and recreational purposes, shall be forever left in the natural wild state, shall forever be kept as a sanctuary for wild beasts and birds, that no road or ways for motor vehicles shall hereafter ever be constructed thereon or therein.” - Gov Baxter I highly encourage everyone to watch the Lorax, read the history of Baxter State Park and enjoy the vast wilderness yourself. It is a playground for adults and one of my favorite places I’ve ever been in my life. You will not find paved roads, sidewalks, cell service, bathrooms, tourist busses , RVs, concessions or anything more than what’s needed to enjoy nature. For the next few days I’ll be enjoying these woods and can’t wait to take my nephew here when he’s old enough. If we’ve learned anything this year it’s that the world needs places humans can escape, distance themselves and breath fresh air. As my love for wild places deepens so does my passion for saving them. I hope to always use this account to encourage and help people get outdoors responsibly. I have a ton of experience in guiding and traveling. Please send me a message if you ever have any questions and please enjoy the photos I care so much about. I will forever be grateful for Gov Baxter’s work.

September - October are usually the months when i’m certain to be in the bush. I love the light at this time of year, the beautiful glow, the stifling heat that lulls you into a sense of complete release. This year however, it seems like i’ll travel there in mind and heart instead, lost in the memory of the Zambezi dust and Luangwa heat, tracing the landscapes with words and images emblazoned behind my eyelashes ✨ There’s beauty everywhere, near and far; and often I wonder how we’ve managed to lose track of things. The latest stats on extinction and biodiversity loss are frankly chilling. Yet, it’s quite simple, we never have been on track to begin with. But i also often wonder what the world will look like in 10,20,50 years. Perhaps it’s time to decide what we value, how we really want to live, what we’re actually, individually going to decide to suit both answers to the question. When you love, you don’t count, they say. Do we love our home enough? Do we love life enough? Biodiversity isn’t a privilege, it’s us and around us.
