This is a historic moment in time, not just for Alpha Kappa Alpha, but indeed, for Black Americans and the country. Senator Harris’ selection will be recorded in the history books as the first Black woman, the first Asian American, and the first graduate of a Historically Black College and University (HBCU ) to be named on a major-party national ticket. Congratulations to our sister, Senator Kamala Harris! #Excellence #AKA1908
Today is the Anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. In 1965, a group of peaceful demonstrators attempted to march from Selma to Montgomery, AL in support of equal voting rights; but were met with violence and bloodshed – widely known as Bloody Sunday. In 2013, the United States Supreme Court invalidated the Voting Rights Act and effectively ended the protections against racially discriminatory voting laws. Today as we commemorate, know your rights and find out if your senator supports the Voting Rights Advancement Act to ensure the right to vote for all Americans. www.senate.gov #AKA1908 #AKASLEAD #VotingRightsAct
