Anyone who knows me even a little bit, knows that I’m mad about science. 🧬 🧪💥🤪 . So you can imagine how excited I was to receive these books for my birthday, both of them absolutely bursting with popular science factoids and explanations for the curious. . Dr Karl’s Random Road Trip Through Science takes the reader on a weird and wonderful journey answering questions you probably never thought to ask, such as: ‘why is wombat poo is cube-shaped?’ and ‘Do fish drink water?’ 🐡 . Aussies will know the author @doctor_karl as the ABC’s science communicator with a penchant for loud shirts and a knack for explaining complex ideas to simple people. With degrees in physics, maths, biomedical engineering, medicine and surgery, he’s absolutely the guy I’d choose to be trapped on a desert island with. . Which brings us to Fun Science with Charlie McDonnell. . That name familiar? Yep, he’s a YouTuber with a pretty face (it’s on the front cover - see what I mean, pretty, right? ) and definitely not a scientist. . But you know what? He has written a really engaging book that tackles all the big stuff: the universe, life, and even the end of time. ⏰💥 Yep, it’s the last chapter. . The fact he isn’t an expert, just a curious human, makes these big topics seem less daunting, which is totally a good thing. . Both of these books are appealingly laid out, and really engaging to read. I have to admit I already have lots and lots of popular science titles, but I’m really happy to add these to my collection. I highly recommend!✨ . . . #popularscience #kidsreference #kidsnonfiction #stemkids #stemforkids #stembooks #birthdayhaul @coollike @quadrillebooks @abcaustralia #drkarl #drkarlkruszelnicki #sciencecommunication #rockinreads #middlegrade #middlegradebooks #middlegradenonfiction #mgnonfiction #bookstagram #kidsbookstagram #sciencegeek #sciencenerd #stemgirls #lovetoread #readinglife #booknerd

Feiert jemand Karneval? 🎓🎓🎓🎓🎓🎓🎓🎓🎓🎓🎓🎓🎓🎓 #studywithme #studywithmevideo #studygramgermany #lernenlernenlernen #lernmotivation #studywithme 📚 #studywithmetimelapse #timelapsestudy #studytimelapse #study 📚 #studysession #studyvlog #steminist #steminists #womeninstem #womeninscience #womenintech #stemgirls #girlsinstem #stemeducation #girlsintech #womenengineers #womeninengineering #womenwhoengineer #engineeringgirls #fraueninmint #mintberufe #ingenieurin [Unbezahlte Werbung da Markennennung]

WHAT’S KEEPING PEOPLE OUT OF STEM JOBS? CALCULUS Job growth in STEM fields is currently outpacing the overall job growth in America. That means that 2.4 million STEM jobs in the U.S. are going unfilled. But universities are only expected to produce one-third of the graduates needed to fill those roles. That’s a vast gap in STEM talent. The leak in the pipeline happens to be in a place no one is talking about: in advanced math classes. Calculus, to be specific. For thousands of students, calculus is a frustrating barrier to a STEM career. Women are 1.5 times more likely to drop calculus, simply from a lack of confidence rather than ability. Yet nearly every STEM job requires at least one semester of it. It is only appropriate that a STEM problem is solved with a STEM solution. Could using AI for providing a more personalized education tailored to every students learning style be the way to solve our gap in STEM issue? One thing is clear, If we can alleviate some of the pain points around calculus, we may see more students awarded STEM degrees.

Just showing off my big brain 🧠 💁🏼‍♀️. . New semester. New kids. Same topic... the Brain! In my Exploring STEM class is where I am lucky to teach about the brain. I find the brain so fascinating to not only to learn about but to teach. If you are into growth mindset you can weave that into your brain unit as well. . We do lessons about the lobes and their functions with hands on activities to go along with it. This then goes into the neuron and then concussions! 🚨 Stay turned for hilarious videos that are coming next week! 🚨 . . . #teachersfollowteachers #teachersofinstagram #teach #iteachstem #stem #stemeducation #stemgirls #stemforkids #middleschool #iteachmiddleschool #iteachmiddles #iteachseventh #iteacheighth #iteachsixth #brain #brainunit #hat #lesson #lessonplanning

New study published in the Nature Journal reveals that scientists have significantly underestimated the amount of methane produced from human made fossil fuels. 😳😳🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Before this point, it was incredibly hard for scientists to pin point where these emissions were coming from ( natural causes vs humans vs something else ). So some peeps at the University of Rochester drilled and accessed some ice cores in Greenland, captured “ancient air bubbles” in the ice, analyzed their chemical composition, then figured out that the isotopes of Carbon-14 (only found in natural sources ) dramatically diminished in the late 19th century aka when fossil fuels came on to the scene & began destroying the earth lol aka they figured out that human made Methane is waaaaay bigger than they thought!😳😳😳😳😳😳🌍🌍🌍🌍🌍🌍🌍🌍🌍🌍🌍🌍 🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓 Why this is a big freaking deal???? Because now instead of scientists thinking that humans were a small part of the blame, there’s now evidence showing that we are up to 25-40% the blame for releasing methane into the atmosphere. Methane is the second biggest greenhouse gas behind carbon dioxide causing global climate change. It is also a lot easier to deal with/ we could see significant reductions in greenhouse gases if policy makers and industry leaders actually start being held accountable for reducing this ish!!! . . . #climatescience #climateeducation #nerd #stemeducation #stemgirls #environmentalist #environmentaleducation #greenhousegases #freedom #browngirlmagic #browngirlbloggers #browngirlgreen #greengoals2020 #empower #environmentaljustice #berniesanders #elizabethwarren

Seriously. Can we start acknowledging patterns again? That women TEND to be more expressive and relationship-oriented. That men TEND to be more stoic and goal-oriented. It doesn’t mean no one breaks out of the box, but THERE IS A BOX. It doesn’t mean a woman is forbidden from STEM careers🙄. It means we acknowledge there are less females in STEM because women tend to gravitate towards nurturing or communicative careers. This is not a problem. Women do not need to be “fixed” by emulating men. Men do not need to be cured of “toxic masculinity” by emulating women. YOU ARE FINE AS YOU ARE.

Today’s the day we celebrate women and girls in science around the world 🌎!! This past year, we’ve loved learning about and highlighting the achievements of many historic and modern figures in science fields 🧪. Women are key members of scientific teams everywhere on Earth and beyond (just ask the astronauts on the ISS 👩‍🚀 🛰️ ). Whether they’re touching the stars 🚀, splitting the atom ⚛️, or living amongst wild animals 🐍🐅, we’re proud to celebrate all of the amazing discoveries, research, exploration, and education our science stars are contributing to their fields. 👍🏽👍🏿👍🏻👍🏾👍🏼 On this day, we want to hear from you! Yes, YOU 🎤. Have you had any science-related experiences you want to share? Perhaps it’s something you’ve learned! Perhaps it’s a science-related goal you’ve set for yourself this year. Did you do any cool experiments 🧫? Have you traveled to an interesting natural environment ⛰️? Leave a comment below and let us all know what about science has you pumped 💪 #STEMGirls #GirlPower #EmpowerGirls #WomenInSTEM #WomenInScience #CelebrateGirls #ScienceIsForEveryone #SheCanSTEM #InternationalDayOfWomenAndGirlsInScience

Sharing our knowledge and our experiences with all of you makes us extremely happy because we get to hear some stories of how something you read here helped you in an interview, or helped you at work/class or the motivation inspired you… These stories fill our heart. These stories motivate us to keep growing together!🌸 • The last two weeks were a little chaotic and when we have this type of week, we tend to share with you the process or the outcome of everything… We would love to share with you that everything went fine and that our -sometimes- compulsive organization helped us to keep everything under control… But this isn't the case today😕 • Yola👩🏻‍💻: - I spent 6 straight hours writing a 5 page paper for my cybersecurity class and I forgot to submit it. I thought I did, but the software we use to submit our assignments thinks differently so I basically did all that work for nothing 🥶 . - I gained 7 pounds in the last two weeks. I tend to eat a lot when I am stressed out. So if you see me a little more chewy in the pictures, you know why🥶 . - I almost got dropped off of all my classes because I was too busy to remember to pay the tuition this month…🥶 • Rosa👩🏽‍💻 - I was so focused on turning in a report at work that I forgot I had a presentation in class so I had to literally improvise everything. I even had to makeup a story of why I decided not to use PowerPoint but only the white board😬 . - I lost my personal computer at the library and I noticed three days later when Yola told me that my backpack felt more light😬. . - I recorded 5 videos for my Senior Project class at 4am and for some reason only 1 got saved…😬 • Do you think we feel comfortable sharing these things? Nope, we don't. But if any of you feel at least a little bit more confident or if you identify yourself with any of our failures, that's enough for us!✨ • No matter what happens, good or bad… Let's turn the page and start over. Every day is a new chance where we get to start over!🌤 • As always, be awesome🌸 📸: @bmagg002 #wocinstem #computerscience #programmerslife #programmer #programmers #programming #girlsintech #Stemgirls #developer #thecodingsisters #girlswhocode #femaleintech #coders

I’ve always wanted to be a morning person but I’ve been a night owl for as long as I can remember! So this year I set out to wake up earlier, have a good breakfast and come into lab earlier. I gotta day it’s been going great. Most of my lab mates are also morning people so I think that’s been motivating me to come in early too. It’s hard to build new habits, especially when it comes to your sleep schedule.☀️ . A study a few years ago from MIT suggested that neuronal firing patterns of the striatum (the part of the brain responsible for developing habits ) will change as you develop a habit. When the animal was learning, the neurons fired continuously throughout the task. But as they did it a few more times and somewhat devloped a routine, the firing was mostly at the start and the end of the task! 🧠 . One thing I haven’t gotten myself to do in the AM is workout... I think that will forever be an afternoon/evening thing for me. 😅

I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to question your own data like you would review someone else's. Think critically, set your standards high, don't jump to conclusions and always ask, how can I be sure this is correct.
