Meet Our People: Jessica, who is inspired to work hard and advance her career to show young girls they can do the same in the aerospace industry. She works on software-defined radios in the Digital Communications Implementation Department, designing receivers in software and FPGAs and designing, simulating, and prototyping various communication systems. “I chose Aerospace because I liked the research and development environment of my department. I enjoy working on several different projects at a time, which allows me to work on projects within my expertise as well as learn new skills. I am inspired by all the women in STEM who have come before me and paved the way for women engineers. We still have a lot of work to do to get more girls to pursue engineering.” We decided one week wasn't enough time to celebrate the many amazing engineers we have here. Who else is excited for this double dose of Engineers Week? We are spotlighting a few of our many great engineers and getting a peek at the exciting projects that they’re focused on. Meet Our People: Jodene, whose work helps Aerospace to stay "agile" in addressing the many challenges presented by the rapidly evolving space enterprise. Jodene works in the Software Systems and, Acquisition Department where she provides software lifecycle expertise and technical consulting to the program offices on software development practices, such as Agile, DevSecOps and Waterfall. “When I went to university, I had no idea what I wanted to do other than I was good at math so I chose Computer Science (playing to my strengths ). Then I went to TRW and my dreams came true. I knew at that moment that this is where I was meant to be. I traveled to other companies, gaining valuable experiences and perspectives, and am now fortunate to be back in the defense industry here at Aerospace. It's the cherry on top of my career! A former colleague contacted me about working at Aerospace. When I heard about the Agile transformation underway at Aerospace and @af_smc , I knew this was the place to be. It was a great opportunity and challenge for me to bring my Agile industry experience to the company and the Air Force.” We decided one week wasn't enough time to celebrate the many amazing engineers we have here. Meet Our People: Alex, an engineer who finds fulfillment in being able to contribute to the work that Aerospace does to keep the nation's space assets functioning properly. Alex provides Engineering and Technology Group support to Aerospace’s various customers in the Albuquerque, NM, area, primarily with conceptual design and assessments, and other reach-back to experts throughout ETG. “Aerospace is in a unique position working with the government and provides an incredible range of work opportunities. In my first role with Aerospace, I used to support launches on console in the STARS Mission Operations Center. My first day-of-launch support, being able to listen and watch as a space asset embarked on its mission was a moment that I knew I wanted to keep doing this work.” We decided one week wasn't enough time to celebrate the many amazing engineers we have here. Today we would like to celebrate the life of Katherine Johnson. She was an exceptional mathematician who was responsible for the success of many of the first U.S. spaceflights, sadly she left us just this Monday on February 24, 2020 at the age of 101. She was born on August 26, 1918. From a young age Johnson showed strong mathematical abilities. For college she enrolled at West Virginia State and graduated summa cum laude in 1937 at the age of 18. Johnson decided that she wanted to become a research mathematician, her first job was teaching but moved on to the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA ). She accepted the job offer at the Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory in 1953. She began her time there as a 'computer' and analyzed topics such as gust alleviation for aircrafts. She was reassigned to Guidance and Control Division of Langley's Flight Research Division. In 1958 NACA replaced by NASA and from 1958 until she retired in 1986, she worked as an aerospace technologist moving to the Spacecraft Controls Branch. She calculated the trajectory for Alan Shepard’s space flight on May 5, 1961, which was the first time an American was in space. She also calculated the launch window for his Mercury mission in 1961. When NASA was first switching to electronic computers to calculate John Glenn’s orbit around Earth, officials asked Johnson to verify the computer’s numbers and Glenn refused to fly unless the calculations were verified by Johnson. She also helped to calculate the 1969 Apollo 11 flight to the moon and worked on the Apollo 13 moon mission. Katherine Johnson has left an amazing legacy as an African American woman in STEM. She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom from Barack Obama and received two NASA facilities named after her, the Katherine G. Johnson Computational Research Facility in Hampton, Virginia and the Katherine Johnson Independent Verification and Validation facility.🖤❤💚💛🔥 . . . . . . #nsbe #blackhistorymonth #bhm #engineering #inventions #stonybrookuniversity #NASA #STEM

RAISE YOUR HAND IF YOUR STUDENTS CONSTANTLY LOSE PENCILS 🙋🏼‍♀️🙋🏽‍♀️🙋🏻‍♀️ // After several years of my husband and I replacing pencils D A I L Y in our classrooms, he found these #PENPAL pencil grips! • • In our classrooms, we have community supplies...which means students hand over all of their supplies at the beginning of the year and we set out what’s needed and when. These pencil grips HAVE SAVED LIVES! 😂 • • We placed a grip at each student’s spot/desk and students are not allowed to leave the classroom/switch classes until a pencil is in the grip. It helps with students walking off with your pencils and guarantees they stay in your classroom for a while! You can buy a 50-PACK FOR $33.00 right now on @amazon ! • • • #teacherspayteachers #teachersoninstagram #teaching #teachingideas #teachersofinstagram #teachersfollowteachers #elementaryteacher #teacher #3rdgrade #texasteacher #texasteachers #iteach #iteach345 #3rdgradeteacher #iteachmath #classroom #classroomideas #teacherlife #STEM #teachergram

Giving equal opportunities for girls to pursue STEM! . Did you know that the choices you make as you enter high school can impact your ability to pursue different programs in post-secondary when you are completing high school🤷🏻‍♀️? This means that the courses you select in grade 9 can set you on a path over the next 4 years that may or may not allow you to experience all the subject areas that you can excel at. The reason for this is that when you apply for various post-secondary programs at the end of high school, they require prerequisite courses. Depending on the science or math classes you take in grade 9, it can close the door to many STEM programs in university😮. . For many girls entering high school in grade 9, they don’t know this, nor do their parents👎🏼. Many young girls tend to lean towards the occupations traditionally held by women and don’t explore areas in STEM because they feel they aren’t as capable. THIS NEEDS TO CHANGE! We need to encourage our girls to keep ALL the doors open and choose STEM prerequisite courses when completing course selections as they enter high school. It is our job to empower girls to make these types of decisions, and show them that they are capable of anything🥰! . For me, I didn’t have many women role models in STEM when I was growing up. In fact, I can’t stress enough how alone and out of place I felt in grade 11 and 12 when I took biology, chemistry, physics, and TWO maths😔! If it wasn’t for my dad (a biology teacher ) encouraging me and reassuring me that I was capable, who knows if I would be pursuing a PhD in molecular biology today🤔? . This is why I am SO EXCITED to share that @girlguidesofcanada has just released a report outlining just how important course selection and keeping the door open to STEM is for girls in high school🤩. I encourage all of you to share this report and join Girl Guides in supporting the young girls in your lives to make informed and empowered decisions. You never know the impact you can have🤗. . PLEASE, if you have friends, cousins, siblings, or know anyone who is in high school, or will be starting soon, TAG them in this post. Let’s get the conversation going🙏🏼! #sponsored

BILL! BILL! BILL! 👨‍🔬👽 Bill Nye the Science Guy has a pretty strange theory: Humans may be descendants of ancient Martians. The TV personality and public science advocate made an unusual pitch for NASA funding this week: We should fund research at the space agency to study whether humankind's origins actually began on the Red Planet. This might sound totally out there. (As far out there as, say, Mars! Sorry, bad joke. ) But, as head of the influential Planetary Society, Nye's main priority is garnering funding for NASA's upcoming Mars rover mission — which will attempt the first-ever feat of sending Martian rock samples back to Earth. And those little rocks will teach us a lot of important information about Mars. Tap the link in our bio to read more. #science #research #NASA #space #BillNye #BillNyeTheScienceGuy #STEM #Mars #Martian #lifeonmars #life #nature #humans #biology #genetics #technology #tech #astronomy #astro #sciencerules #knowledge #scienceguy #scientist #quoteoftheday #quotes #instaquote #future #futurism
